To The Law School Students: December 10, 1950 At the opening of this school year, it was obvious that f o r at least two reasons, you, the faculty, and the Administration would face considerable difficulties in maintaining the high standards of the Law School. In the first place, the construction of three classroom buildings t o the west of the Law Building posed difficulties for faculty and students alike because of the noise,dust, and other inconviences resulting from this activity. To most of us this has become a little more bearable because of the realization that the Administration has at long last concluded to construct a new Law Bu i Id i ng at an approximate cost of $3,000,000, the construction to begin in the summer of 1951 or as soon thereafter as world conditions will permit. Realizing this difficulty, you and your student officials have coope rated magnificiently, and I believe that we have successfully carried on the work of the Law School. At the time of t h e writing of this letter, it appears that the other reason may result in more serious difficulties than those anticipated, and very soon a declaration of a national emergency may be necessary. If so, what the future will hold for you, as indeed, for this nation, is anybody’s guess. No doubt, very soon after, if not before, the end of the school year many of you will be in some branch of the armed services, and many for the second time within a ten-year period. Regardless of this fact, it has been, and will continue to be, my desire for this Law School as well as others to continue as best it can in the accustomed path to the end that you and others of the legal profession may keep alive the torch of freedom, sot hat government “of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
