President of Texas Western DR. DYSART E. HOLCQMB

Page 10 text:

Dr. Dysart E. Holcomb with his wife and four children came to Texas Western in the summer of 1955. Dr. Holcomb, well-qualified for the position of President, attended Texas Tech from 1933 until 1937, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. He then went to the University of Michigan until 1941. ln 1938 he received his Masters of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and then his Doctorate in Philosophy. Dr. Holcomb finds time now and then to play a few holes of golf. He is also interested in woodworking. Since coming to Texas Western, the President has taken an interest in lapadery, the art of metal work and jewelry making. Dr. Holcomb hopes to make Texas Western one of the outstanding schools in the Southwest. He said, the raising of academic standards cannot be done overnight, but there must be a gradual increase in the minimum standards of the school. Although the size of the school is of no consequence, there are definite needs for the expansion of physical facilities. A critical need exists at the present time for a large classroom building and an office building. Dr. Holcomb says that the construction of these buildings should begin in l958. To Dr. Iohn L. Waller, Dean of the Graduate Divi- sion, we dedicate this 1957 Flowsheet, in gratitude for the service he has rendered this school and its students for the past twenty-tive years. Dr. Waller has taught since 1906, except for time out for graduate Work and overseas duty in World War I. He came to Texas Western in 1931 to serve as Chairman of the enlarged Department of His- tory and Government, when the college was authorized to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1940, when the Graduate Council was established, Dr. Waller was made its first chairman. Since that time he has served in this capacity. We of the Flowsheet are proud to present this an- nual to this man who has been an integral part of Texas Western's growth.
