Few people ever realize just how much toil and labor goes into the production and publishing of one of these things. There are always certain key people who seem to have done most of the work, but, as in any large production, there is usually a supporting cast which never gets mentioned at all. In order to avoid this, I have taken this page, as editor, to use for that purpose, and also to give you readers a bit more insight into the background and production of this book you are peering at so intently. Yearbooks have always been the sort of things that should increase in value as time goes by, much like your savings account used to before you got yourself into this school. Although you may not see any need right now to record everybody's ugly mugs - both friend and foe, student and teacher, secretary and boss - since you see each other every day, many of you will hopefully look back through this book in future years and remember not only events which are recorded herein, but also people. Some of the people you see today may not be around next year. lln the express case of students, those you see today may not be around TOMORROWII In any event, we have tried to present to you a book full of faces, garnished with a slight amount of slapstick, a lot of sarcasm, a fourth ofa cup of B.S., and a dash of salt. We hope that as you thumb through this book you will want to go back through again and read the writing next time! Ilf this IS your second time through, please disregard the previous sentence.l We did not intend to enrage anyone, pick on anyone in particular, or hurt anyone's feelings. We hope that you will take the sarcastic humor for what it is, and not as a serious iab at anyone or anything. The section editors exercised almost complete control over the material in their sections, and, although I did not agree with or condone some of the things that appear therein, I should accept the responsibility for it being there - but I won't. Since we don't have a Complaints Department established yet, though, please come to me about anything you consider specifically tasteless. Although I handle only the compliments, I will gladly direct you to the responsible party. Before I get any farther, a brief history of this Fang in your hands is in order. The 1976-77 year marked the beginning of many things here. The student body is beginning to show strength in its numbers, especially as its numbers increase. The idea for a yearbook evolved directly from the new Student Council, founded in the Spring of '77. We therefore first thank them for their enthusiasm and support. This book did not come into being until March, 1977. We were determined to have a yearbook this year, so Marc Yasoni, Phil Doleac, and I began furiously taking pictures, and with a little extra help from Mickey Macaluso, Scott Berry, and Kaye Peterson, in two months' time we had taken the equivalent of about IOOO pictures, of which approximately half appear on the pages of this book. I spent the first half of my summer processing film and printing all these pictures in Kaye's darkroom, using mostly Andy Pickens' equipment. Once the pictures were all printed, the staff began putting the book together. Tom Glass, Jim Flaggert, and Carl Chilton all had never worked on a yearbook before, but all three did exceptional iobs with their respective sections. Tom would like to thank the UCLA yearbook he borrowed from Dr. Snyder for providing him with original material during creative lapses. I am especially grateful to Clyde and Betty Yost for all the work they did on the faculty section and other drudgery work. Without them, we would still be only half-finished. Jim West spent a lot of time on his section, and Roy D. Smith provided much of the copy you will read in the Faculty and Sophomore sections. Special thanks to Jim Anderson of Taylor Publishing Co. It was due to him that the cover is so nice, and his special deadline I whenever you finish it l and overall support of our venture make us sure we will work with him for some years to come. And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my wife, who never could understand why I spent so much time on this crazy damn thing lbut then, neither did Il. She, more than anyone else, was glad to see it go to the publisher so that she could regain a husband. The general concensus of the staff is that this is our best effort. None of us wanted to sign our names to a mediocre publication, and we all worked hard to satisfy you and ourselves. Thanks for buying the first volume of the Fang, for without you readers, and your support and encouragement, it would not have been worth a dime. M7211 XQTUJQQMQU Mark Sweeney Editor
