TEXAS It ' s huge! I remembered thinking as my parents drove me toward cam- pus via 1-35. My eyes just couldn ' t take it all in that first day I arrived at the University. My palms sweated and my stomach sank when the orientation check-in lady in Jester Center eyed me in disbelief and said, YOG DON ' T KNOW YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER?! No, but should I? I asked as I glanced over my shoulder at my parents like a kindergartner without his lunch money. Ha! she said. You ' ll be able to say it backwards and from the middle out by the time you get out of here! After my first year, my GPA was rock bottom, and during the summer I told my parents that I wanted to stay at home and go to school. I had two problems: I had the wrong major and I had no idea what other ac- tivities there were at the University besides studying. When I came back, it took only a minimum of strolling around campus for me to see that there was a lot more to the University than just the 5th floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library and the corner of my dorm room stacked with books. This year, it was more than just knowing my Social Security number that made me feel a part of the University. It was making the effort to TAKE A LOOK INSIDE. By Miles Fain 4 Take a Look Inside

From the inevitable perils of registration and the terror In the trees the saga of target-bombing grackles lurking In shady areas of campus to apartheid and free speech rallies and their subsequent arrests, we ' ve striven to showcase main features of the book in a per- sonal tone, providing an insider ' s view and a more Intimate approach to the topics we consider to give the greatest insight into life at the University.
