asma by Sujata K. Muilhy During Gallagher ' s early days on the television show M, his aim was to make a contestant laugh within a minute. After 10 years, his goal of making people laugh re- mained the same. Personal touches and personality were the keystones of Gallagher ' s success, and he brought those traits to the Performing Arts Center March 9. His wiry frame clad in a tight T- shirt sported looK poke of the dumbfounded innocent, or glowed with of a Cheshire grin He seemed to continually scurry around the stage like a mouse while making preparations for the next part of his act. The twinkle in his eyes was the greatest when he came out from the wings with his famous Sledge-o- matic. The Sledge-o-matic con- sisted of two pie plates and a burgeoning mallet with which he sliced, diced, mashed, crushed and ground anything, all for a mere $19.95. This parody of those annoy- ing Ronco commercials had people who knew the barrage was coming a bit uneasy on the first few rows. Gallagher first slammed an alarm clock, then came the heavy artillery large, ripe melons. The safer back rows squealed with delight as cantaloupes, honeydews and watermelons spewed into the arena. As the smell of melons lingered, Gallagher moved to more at-home subjects such as back-yard barbecues. After imitations of the typical cook and tablesetter, he ques- tioned the validity of commercials about how one cigarette caused a forest fire when a gallon of gasoline and a blowtorch can ' t get my hibachi started.
