Opposite Page: Kappa Alpha Psl member Hendrix Nelson talks to a resident at the Sallna Rest Home, where the fraternity spent one Saturday each month doing repair and lawn work. Edited by Laura Lochridge by Laura Lochric Part of the fraternity code said that when you take something from the community, you give something back. Both the fraternities and sororities accomplished this by doing service projects and raising money for charities. Most national fraternities were associated with large philanthropies. The agencies recommended projects to the chapters, the Interfraternity Council received calls and some groups looked into the community. Car washes, street parties, fund- raisers and olympiads were just some of the choices. Another popular event was the hold-up. In a hold-up, fraternity and sorority members stood in intersections and ap- proached cars to ask drivers to donate money. Service was the central hub of the black fraternities, and the black sororities were founded on the same principle uplifting the black community. Greeks set themselves apart from the popular view of fraternities and sororities as rowdy social groups devoted to themselves by giving their time, their energy themselves to making Austin better.
