Everything ads up to $ Staff maintains i TSP ' s revenues by Janice Cole From the University Co-Op to Rooster Andrews, the Texas Stu- dent Publications Advertising Staff maintained a wide variety of accounts. The staff consisted of (JT students who were involved in every aspect of advertising including selling the ad to doing the final lay-out design. The staff was responsible for all advertis- ing in The Daily Texan, the Peregrinus law school yearbook and Utmost magazine. I love sales and it ' s a challenge selling new ads, Tammy Hajovsky, advertising junior, said. New staff members were recruited at the beginning of the year on the basis of their previous sales experience. Generating new sales was one of the most important aspects of the job since The Daily Texan relied on the revenues brought in by the adver- tising department. Policy repercussion TSP Board deliberates regulations publication by Hugh Strange and Kris Ermis It seemed simple enough in the beginning. The Texas Student Publications Board would require every organization that bought pages in the 1986 Cactus to register with the Campus Activities Office. But one group of organizations refused to sign: the sororities which were members of the Panhellenic Council. I regretted that the sororities did not sign. It would have given the Cactus more revenues, but since the TSP Board made the ruling, it is im- portant to stick to it now, Board President Carol Peoples, journalism senior said. The rule was passed after a presentation by the Black Student Alliance at the October 1984 board meeting. BSA ' s intent was to ensure that all groups who purchased pages in the Cactus register with the University and thereby sign a pledge of antidiscrimination. The TSP Board was the governing body for Texas Student Publications, the University auxiliary enterprise which published the Cactus year- book, The Daily Texan, Peregrinus Top: Martin Gibson, professor of journalism, listens to the report of results from TSP elections at the Mar. 19 meeting of the board. It appointed editors of all publications except the Texan editor, who was elected by the student body. It also set the budget for each publication. Students who work for TSP are fortunate to have some of the best facilities and resources in the nation available to them. I feel happy to have worked on the board because of the professionals involved who work to make it such a fine organization, Peoples said. 292 TSP Board

. ' A traditional trendsetter Cactus yearbook takes closer look at University by Laurie Rosenbower Investigating local food and club hot spots, the design of a new class ring for the Pharmacy Council and the innerworkings of the University ' s athletic system, were all ways that the 1986 Cactus Yearbook staff went about achieving its theme Take A Look Inside. (JT isn ' t just a place where you come to study. It ' s a place where you can gain experience, grow and be a participant in the community. That ' s what we ' ve tried to show in this year ' s edition of the Cactus. We ' ve tried to give an inside view of the campus and its students, Editor Miles Fain, special education senior, said. The book was divided into eight sections with staffs comprised of students from every aspect of stu- dent life. Each section tried to give a complete picture for the portion of the year ' s events it covered. Organization sections focused their stories on one main activity of the groups covered to keep with the theme. We always tried to find the most exciting and positive event and focus on that event, Hugh Strange, jour- nalism freshman, said. The features section followed the theme by adding sidebars to the spreads. We added a mini-story about the subject of the spread focusing in on one aspect of it, Christi Mance, organizational communication junior, said. Features about various members of the athletic system were also added to the athletics. They gave us a chance to go behind the scenes and write on something besides games and com- petition, Steve Engler, advertising sophomore, said. She Hi Smith, ... journalism freshman, ln the academics section, we arranges a photo took a different approach with the org aonKe deans to make them come more professionals section, alive. We also tried to personalize the section with quotes from the students, Carrie Alexander, psychology sophomore, said. The entire book is designed to draw attention to those things we no longer see, those things we ' ve become accustomed to, Associate Editor Anne Eby, public relations senior, said. Too often we breeze over certain things without even stopping to think about who was responsible for it and why it worked or didn ' t work. This year, we tried to make the Cactus a trendsetter. It ' s already an award-winning book nationally, but we felt its traditional style could be revamped, she said. We ' re really trying to put a photo emphasis on the yearbook because a picture is worth a thousand words, Associate Editor Phan DeLaTorre, organizational communication senior, said. Wild art was used in the limelight section to draw in the theme. We have pictures taken around campus that show some of campus life, Kimberly Henson, psychology senior, said.
