TORRENTIAL Top: A featliered foe preens in a shadowy campus spot. Opposite Page: Students exiting the Music Building flee from the shower accompanying roosting grackles. I never really gave much thought to the throngs of grackles that loitered in the University ' s trees. I understand that the birds could get so noisy that the women of Littlefield dorm had trouble sleeping. But I lived off campus, and the only time I couldn ' t sleep was when the old lady next door would spend a couple of hours next to my window yowling, Heeee-reeee, kittty!! Heeeeere, kitty! Sometimes I ' d find myself looking for a place to sit at the shuttle stop, only to realize that all the benches were covered with some identifiable white substance. I remember thinking that they ' d have to sandblast to get that guano off. But then I heard about how un- popular the little guys were with the administration. Seemed they tried just about everything to get rid of the pesky grackles, including firing can- nons to scare them out of their roosts. So you see, they weren ' t just any ordinary grackles; they were outlaws. Openly flaunting administration policy, exercising their rights to free speech and free bread crumbs. Gathering together at other than the designated time and place for grackles. Sort of hard not to admire the little rebels, wasn ' t it? By David Eldridge ir
