I thought to myself, Boy, people will think of any excuse to throw a party. If there isn ' t an occasion, they ' ll make one up. No matter what weekend I looked on my calendar, there was always something going on at the University. Starting in the fall, there were bashes to kick off the year, Friday Gras at the Union or first-football- game-of-the-season parties. October boasted Halloween and of course, OU weekend up In Dallas that resulted In a 200-mile parade of cars heading north on Interstate 35. Shortly after this festive month came all the holiday parties that everyone had to juggle with their schedule of finals. Spring semester was no better, because It started off with Super Bowl parties which led Into Valen- tine ' s Day parties, and before you knew It, It was St. Patrick ' s Day. The semester progressed with the Sesqulcentennial festivities spread out from March 2 through San Jacin- to Day in April, not to mention all the Round-Up hoopla. By the time summer rolled around, I was ready to go home and rest! And to think my mother wondered why I wasn ' t on the honor roll. In less than two weeks, the U.S. had asserted Its military power over Libya and con- cerned students had exercised their freedom of speech In campus demonstrations. Unauthorized rallies at the base of the Main Building resulted In the ar- rests of almost 200 students who were objecting to the practice of racial apartheid In South Africa. They asked that CJT divest funds from American corporations doing business In South Africa and pressed for the right to speak publicly anywhere on campus at any time. Amid this turmoil, none could have anticipated what would happen next. Striking out against the terrorism of Libyan leader Col. Moammar Khadafy. the U.S. ordered bombers to hit his bases In Libya on April 15. The attack was prompted by the bombing of a West Berlin disco supposedly Instigated by the Libyan Embassy In East Berlin which killed an American soldier and a Turkish woman. In 1986, Americans showed a will- ingness to speak up for what they believed In and to act on these beliefs.
