Civil Engineering Dr. Victor Szebehely, Aerospace Engineering Architecture In a recent national architectural regis- tration exam, UT graduates averaged the second highest score among Texas col- leges and universities. The score average was second only to Rice University gradu- ates. Dean Harold Box said he felt that the UT School of Architecture has been doing a good job of preparing students for their professions. The Dallas Architectural firm of Pratt, Box and Henderson was founded by Box. The firm has received local, national and international awards for its architecture. The College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects honored Box for his notable contributions to the profession of architecture in 1971. Dr. Harold Box, Dean Architecture 203

School of Engineering According to Dean Earnest Gloyna, the School of Engineering is ranked one of the top 20 in the nation. The School combines course study and research to substantiate the high academic ranking. Dean Earnest Gloyna In 1975, dean of the School of Engi- neering, Earnest Gloyna, was one of nine men recognized by the Venezuelan Acad- emy. He is a noted authority on environ- mental engineering and water resources. Dr. Donald R. Paul Chairman of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Donald Paul personally researched experimental polymers. He has been con- cerned with the conversion of material. Dr. H. G. Rylander As chairman of Mechanical Engineer- ing, Dr. H. G. Rylander started a center for plasma confinement and heating. He was one of eight men who designed the dams at Marble Falls. Dr. R. S. Schechter Dr. R. S. Schechter, chairman of Petro- leum Engineering, researched oil recovery. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr.H.H.Woodson Interested in energy studies, Dr. H. H. Woodson, chairman of Electrical Engi- neering, did research into pulse power supply as cheaper energy. Dr. Joseph Malina Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Joseph Malina has advised numerous industries in the devel- opment of solutions to industrial waste. Dr. Victor Szebehely Dr. Victor Szebehely, chairman of Aerospace Engineering, worked on a team at General Electric to develop a reentry nose cone used in Ballistic Missiles and Apollo Space Missions. School of Natural Sciences Keeping ahead of the times was the goal of the School of Natural Sciences. Headed by 12 department heads and a dean, the school brings thousands of stu- dents to UT from all over the world. Dr. Esmond Snell Dr. Esmond Snell, chairman of the Microbiology Department, has done extensive research on vitamin B6 and has discovered three new forms of the vita- min, receiving the Meade-Johnson Vita- min B6 Complex Award. Dr. Creighton Burk Marine Science is an international field which has brought interest and com- petence to UT, Dr. Creighton Burk, chairman of the Department of Marine Science, said. Dr. James Daniel Holding a deep interest in transactional analysis, Dr. James Daniel, chairman of the Math Department implemented a pro- gram to help students overcome their math anxieties through group therapy. Dean A. R. Schrank It is difficult to make a clear distinc- tion between research and teaching, Dean A. R. Schrank of the College of Natural Sciences, said. Teachers not interested in research can be outdated very quickly, particularly in the sciences. Dr. Hugh Forrest Describing himself as a reformed chemist, Dr. Hugh Forrest, Zoology Chairman, laughed when he showed off his chipped tooth, the result of an experi- ment ' s explosion. A native Scotsman, he came to UT in 1955. Dr. William Wade Dr. William Wade has headed the Chemistry Department since June, 1974. He admitted that this was not the best time for science, but that Chemistry i here to stay. Dr. Thomas Grif f y feel more like a bureaucrat than a nuclear physicist shuffling papers, Phys- ics Chairman Dr. Thomas Griffy said. He is vice-president of the Committee on Academic Governance at UT. Dr. Theodore Dele voryas Listed among Who ' s Who in America, Botany Chairman Dr. Theodore Delevor- yas came to UT from Yale in 1972. Chair- man since 1974, he tries to keep every- body happy.
