THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS To the Students of the University of Texas: HARRY HUNTT RANSOM Chancellor of The University of Texas For each of us in the University community, I congratulate the 1965 Cactus staff on planning a volume emphasizing the individual student. Like all other American institutions , universities must take into consid- eration mass movements, group interests, team play, and common purposes. Yet education is a highly personalized experience. It requires both tough-minded realism about belonging and sheer independence. The most recent indictment of the large, complex university is that the individual may get lost. Getting lost and finding oneself is educative. Avoiding waste and irrelevance, a university must capitalize on its uncertainties and certainties, disappointments and accomplishments. Individual students and student organizations are making a tremendous contribution toward this end . Without their deep involvement in the University ' s purposes, most of our goals would be unattainable. In the qualities of student participation a university attains its special mark, not by devices like old school ties and new-school straight-jackets. The year which this edition of the Cactus recalls was a time when students made major contributions to the individuality of the University itself. Future students will be grateful for that fact. Sincerely yours. T Hy L- -4Tr-l t HR:np Harry Ransom Chancellor Page 28
