OLDEN notes floating out over the breeze, coming to greet you in a filled classroom, or during that coffee break at Home Drug, or perhaps rousing you from late morning slumber . . . Ornate iron hands counting ofF the minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years of your stay at the University . . . Orange and white lights shining with your reflected pride at Longhorn victories, or with your sad or regretful remembrance of commemorative events . . . A tall, slender, weather-stained, time-scarred Tower, throwing its majestic shadow over your life on the Forty Acres giving strength, inspiration, hope, comfort to you during your stay on campus . . . HE YEAR 1957-58 has passed in a calm, yet significant, way. It was in this year that The University of Texas celebrated its seventy-fifth year as an institution of higher learning. Conferences and convocations have provided study and decision concerning its future a future which will include not only aca- demic progress, but also more serious interest in extracurricular activity. This year has seen a tradition pass away when the Round-Up Parade was abolished, and a new one become firmly entrenched the Charros Annual Rodeo. It has seen an underdog Longhorn eleven come from a predicted cellar position to rate second in the Conference, and receive a Sugar Bowl bid. It has seen its host of professors and staff members don colorful robes to walk with students and laymen in an academic procession up the steps of the Main Building for the convocation of the 75th Year. It has seen hasty ten o ' clock trips to Dirty ' s for some before-cur- few refreshment. It has seen playful students picnicking at Bull Creek while anxi- ously awaiting the opening of Barton Springs (which never quite made it due to Mother Nature ' s floods.) It has seen you, the students, working day and night for fra- ternities and sororities, professional and social societies, religious activities, student government committees, student publications, and studies. It has seen mid-term come, and final s go it has seen students come, and students go. These, and many other events, have been captured in the 1958 CACTUS. While the ink is still drying, reality has become a mem- ory; and through the years as you leaf through your book, may the memories whether fond or sad bring to mind your life on the Forty Acres.
