FOREWORD The words The University of Texas have a different meaning for every student who comes to the Forty Acres. The scientist, the musician, the engineer, each will look back on his stay here with different memories. To those of us just beginning our college careers, The Univer- sity holds promise. To those of us who are leaving, there may already be a nostalgic glow over the past four years crowded with new experiences, new friends, disappointments and accomplishments. The staff of the 1953 Cactus has attempted to capture the spirit of The University in this collection of college memories. Not only the spirit of a cheering football crowd but the spirit which is created every day by the composite thinking, seeking, loving, living of the 12,500 people who are themselves The University of Texas.
