FOREWORD Every year thousands of students pass through our 40 Acres, living and enjoying collegiate days which will remain among their very happiest memories in years to come. Our enrollment, like that of all universities, has felt the deep scar of war and world discontent. The incoming stream of freshmen, cut short by military requirements, could not possibly equal the exodus of veterans and graduates and enlisting upperclassmen and at times a noticeable lethargy settled over our great campus. But even so, in retrospect we see that this has been one of our finest and proudest years. And we soon learned how very impossible it was for us to capture completely the happi- ness and gratefulness of 12,000 students. If, in the many years distant, your enjoyment of the CACTUS increases as your memory of now familiar scenes and faces fade, then it will have served its first purpose for the yearbook differs from other publications in that the immediate objective is the distant future. If you have thrilled to your collegiate days aqua- planed on Lake Austin, picnicked at New Braunfels and Bull Creek, danced at the Country Club or the Tower, cheered for the Longhorns, griped at the quizzes, and in general had more fun than you ' ve ever had before then maybe the vast treasurehouse of memories within these pages will bring a smile back again when you recall your days at ole UT.
