DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE ARNO NOWOTNY Dean of Student Life Arno Nowotny, whose name appears in Who ' s Who in America and Who ' s Who in American Education, is the Dean of Student Life affectionately called Dean Shorty by University students. He is faculty advisor for Friars, Cowboys, and Phi Eta Sigma, and is the national president of Alpha Phi Omega as well as a member of the National Executive Board of Phi Eta Sigma. CARL V. BREDT Assistant Dean of Student Life, Director of the Veterans ' Advisory Service Carl V. Bredt, who was associated with the University first in 1935, has served as Assistant Dean of Student Life since 1948. He is also director of the Veterans ' Advisory Service and is in charge of men ' s dormitories and approved boarding houses. A unique activity for a dean, Mr. Bredt officiates at Southwest Conference football and basketball games. JOE D. FARRAR Director, University Employment Service Joe D. Farrar became head of the University Em- ployment Service in June, 1950, after having served as a psychologist-counselor with the Testing and Guidance Center. Previously, he was dean of men at Arkansas State College and a member of the voca- tional education department at Stephens College. ROBERT GEORGE GORDON Assistant Dean of Men, Director of the University Veterans 3 Advisory Service, Coordinator of Religious Activities Robert George Gordon, Assistant Dean of Men, is the Director of the University Veterans ' Advisory Service and Coordinator of Religious Activities. He is also faculty chairman of the Faculty-Student Cabi- net. Dean Gordon does a considerable amount of lec- turing for student and civic groups, but is fond of sports as well as his favorite pastime, public address. PACE 18

DEAN OF MEN JACK HOLLAND, Dean of Men Succeeding Dr. Charles V. Durham, Dean Holland took over as Dean of Men in 1948. He received his B.A. from The Uni- versity of Texas in 1936, and served as assistant cashier in the Bursar ' s Office from 1937 to 1943, where he was in charge of student loans. Dean Holland is a staunch believer in extra curricular ac- tivities for students, as a means of developing personality, and the ability to lead or to follow, as well as to co-operate with others. ibrttynfi. Win, and WILLIAM D. BLUNK, Assistant Dean of Men Dean Blunk ' s main interests lie in the committee work he does with the students, but he never misses a football, baseball, or basketball game. Coming to the University in 1948. the dean is faculty committee chairman of loans and scholarships, orientation processes, and general stu- dent organization. He is the faculty sponsor for such groups as the Rally Committee. Union Board, Campus League of Women Voters, and Mica. CHARLES CLARK, Director of Non-Academic Personnel During his undergraduate days. Mr. Clark was a Friar, president of Alpha Phi Omega, and a member of Delta Upsilon. Positions he has held on the staff at the Uni- versity include assistant dean of men and director of the student employment agency. Some students come for advice and others just to chat, but no matter what the reason, they are always welcome in Dean Holland ' s office. PAGE 17

PE EX-STUDENTS ' ASSOCIATION BYRON SKELTON President JOHN A. McCURDY Secretary The Ex-Students ' Association is a service organization whose purpose is to establish a stronger relationship between the University and its alumni. This organization engages in various worthwhile activities such as the publishing of a monthly magazine, The Alcade, in the interests of the ex-students. A permanent file including names and information regarding all ex-students is maintained in the Association office, and it is at the disposal of the University staff, students, organizations, and publications. In an attempt to bring those people who have previously had connections with the University back to the campus, the Ex-Students ' Association sponsors Dad ' s Day in the fall and Round-Up each spring. The organization also takes part in a Union Building program which has resulted in the erection of Gregory Gymnasium, Hogg Auditorium, the Women ' s Gymnasium, and the Texas Union. The most recent project of the asociation is an annual giving program which encourages each former student to donate something to the University every year. PAGE 19
