TO THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS In dedicating the 1951 Cactus to foreign o y o students on our campus, we hope to express our gratitude for the valuable lessons in understanding which international students are teaching to us. Through living and working with students from foreign lands, the American students will more quickly realize the day of international cooperation and world peace.

International students are contributing a large part toward making the University a cosmopolitan community. Representing 59 countries, over three hundred fifty students from every continent in the world have come to Texas to study, work, play and to associate ideas, custo ms, and opinions with the American students. Their industry and interest have been both a contribution and an inspiration to those people associated with them. Banding together, the international students have joined in the Asiatic Club, the Arab Student Association, Latin-American Union, the Turkish Club, Chinese Student Association and the Commonwealth Club. International students enter the University as Displaced Persons, Exchange Students, are sent by their own governments, or are private students studying on their own funds. The University aids the foreign students by having a Displaced Students Committee which handles the arrangements for bringing dis- placed persons to the campus for study. There are special classes set up to accommodate students whose English is not proficient enough for them to comprehend all the vocabulary used in regular class work. An International Students ' Office has been provided by the University under the direction of Dean J. W. Neal to work with the foreign students. The Y maintains a World Relatedness Commission for the foreign stu- dents to give them the opportunity to learn more about America and for them to contribute their ideas and customs to the American students. Possibly one of the most important lessons American students have learned from our foreign neighbors is a sense of responsibility. Not only is financial help given to the less fortunate students, but Americans have helped to provide recreation, entertainment, and help in displaying as true a picture as possible of the American way of life to the fellow students from overseas. Also the American students realize there are more jobs to be done and larger goals to be accomplished in future years. PAGE 9
