LORAINE JACKSON Following Commencement exercises in June, 1885. the second graduating class, composed of twenty lawyers and one lone academ, joined with the thirteen lawyers who received the first degrees in 1884 and organized the Alumni Association of The University of Texas. With each succeeding Commencement the Association grew in number and in influence, as its. members assumed positions of leadership and responsibility in every phase of the life of the state. Ijf In 1912 the name of the group was changed from Alumni Association to Ex-Students ' Association so as to include all former students, regardless of degree status, and on this broad basis of ex-student participation the Association has operated since that time. Dedicated to the service of past, present and future generations of students, th e Association maintains complete records of all who have ever attended the University. These records form an invaluable source of information for students, faculty and administrative officers, as well as for ex-students. Among its services to students the Association has raised and administers loan and scholarship funds totaling a quarter of a million dollars. Implementing its statewide program of service to the University are ex-student clubs located in all the larger cities and towns in the state and in out-of-state centers from New York to San Francisco. Among traditions established and fostered by the Association are March Second meetings all over the world and the annual Round-Up, or Spring Homecoming. The Alcalde, Ex-Student publication, constitutes the principal medium of contact between the University and its scattered ex-students. Its purpose and aspirations were aptly described in its first issue printed in April, 1913: The Alcalde is published primarily for the alumni and ex-students of The University of Texas. It has more than a single purpose. It desires to entertain them: it desires to instruct them: it desires to preserve for them and their successors the history and. tradition of the Institution. The past with its fund of reminiscence, the present with its activities and achievement, the future with its problems and possibilities are the fields it would cultivate. It is as limitless, then, in its scope as the University and needs of the institution. Directing the work of the Association is an Executive Council of twenty-two members, made up of fifteen District Councilmen and seven Councilmen-at-Large. These Councilmen are elected by the members of the Association and serve as the field agents of the Association in carrying out its widespread program of service to the University. JOHN A. RAWLINS President JOHN A. McCURDY Executive Secretary PACE 17
