THEOPHILUS S. PAINTER President of The University of Texas THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT AUSTIN 12 TO THE STUDENT BODY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Into this volume have gone the best efforts of the Editor and of a number of contributors who have sought to compose a portrait of The University of Texas, in many of its aspects of work and play, for the academic year, 19 7- 8. As such, it will give you lasting pleas- ure. Today, your interest in the Cactus probably centers in the so- cial activities of your intimates, but many men and women who appear here are destined to occupy positions of responsibility and honor in state, national and professional circles. In later years, you will want to look back and see what these individuals were like when you knew them here at the University. Indeed, I know of few pleasures which are more poignant, in after years, than the reawakening of memories which comes when one leafs through the annuals of his col- lege days. Everyone who has attended college knows that the yearbook plays an important part in the contemporary life of the institution and has some historical value. The annual tends to keep alive friendships formed here on the campus and gives to each of us more lasting memories of events and of dominant campus personalities of the year. The events and associations of the year are fresh in your mind now, but, as you become immersed in your life ' s work, these memories soon dim. Your Cactus will serve to refresh your memory and when you come back to class reunions, as I hope you will often, will give these occasions a deeper and more lasting Interest. I hope that you will keep your Cactus, because, as you go through the University, you see only a small sector of the various activities and interests of students in this large institution. The yearbook epito- mizes the University, as it is in 19147-14-8, and will make you feel that you are a more Intimate part of it. No institution can endure long without the loyal support of its alumni and ex-students. Return to the campus often, visit with your former teachers, and, through various alumni and ex-student activities, do your part in helping the Univer- sity to serve best the people of this great State. Cordially yours, fieophllus S. Painter President TSP lt PACE 11
