FUTURE FORTY ACRES

Page 30 text:

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR President of Republic of Texas 1838-1840 IT WAS IN 1839, seven whole years before the Republic of Texas sur- rendered its sovereignty to become a member of the United States, and whili- that Republic was still embroiled in the turmoil caused by its recent revolution against Mexico, that the University. which was to become the greatest in the South, was conceived. Mirabeau B. Lamar, then President of the Republic and since famed as the father of Texas education, recommended that fifty leagues of land be set aside for a state university. Even though Mexico was still threatening momentary invasion, ami the architects of Texas were concerned with what must have seemed matters of greater and more immediate importance to the future of their country, the vision and faith which had made possible the birth of a nation did not fail them. The necessity of education in the construc- tion of a civilized community was seen, and Lamar ' s plans prevailed. The State Capital and College Hill were located in Austin.
