CARROLL, CIPS Ping-Pong experts, long-hair record fiends, movie-goers, jitterbugs, magazine and newspaper readers can all relax in their favorite fashion at the TEXAS UNION, student-governed and supported campus center and focal point of University social activities. Last year the life of the Union was thought to be threatened as the Legislature passed a bill for a voluntary Union fee while students were asking for a compulsory fee. The students recognized the services and advantages of such a center, however, as forty-six percent paid in the winter and forty-eight in the spring. The life blood of the organization is the program committee which works under the sponsorship of the Union Board of Directors. The Board is made up of both faculty and student members and endeavors to fulfill its obliga- tion by giving the students what they want when they want it. Faculty and ex-student representatives on the board are Herschell P. Gipson, Dorothy Gebauer, John A. McCurdy, and Fred Adams. Larry Jones is chairman and other student members include A. K. Bergstrom, Nora Ann Carroll, Jean Begeman, Carolyn Carleton. Dorothy Ann Olson is director of the Union. THE DANCE COMMITTEE, headed by Ben Haden, has brought both sweet and swing music with such bands as Jack Teagarden, Fletcher Henderson, Ray Herbeck, Bennie Carter, and the San Marcos Navitones. The Longhorn Room, campus night club in the Union lounge, had its grand opening this fall in typical fashion with Cowboys acting as ushers. Members of the Dance Committee include Pat McClarney, Lucille Head, Charles V. Dunham, Kathleen Bland, Gene Stinnett, Frank Sherwood, Bob Peck. DUNHAM, BLA cCI.ARNKY, MADKN. SIIKKWOOD. IIKAD.
