Wilmot S525 prize 1915-'16. . Review of 1 91 5-' 1 6 Season The University of Texas laid undisputed claim to the U. S. Intercollegiate record for de- bate last year when four teams went forth and won six consecutive debates on the Prepared- ness question, three in the territory of the opposition. In what is believed to have been the longest debating trip ever made in the United States, Charles I. Francis and Orville W. Wood defeated the Universities of Colorado. Southern Cali- fornia. and Arizona, by unanimous decisions Cexcept against Arizonaj, on the negative side of the question, returning after an absence of three weeks. Meeting a strong team from the University of Missouri, Jerome Crossman and Carl Calloway won for Texas by a two to one decision, in Austin, upholding the affirmative. The Oklahoma team lost to Lynn W. Landrum and Myron G. Blalock, representing the University, and the University of Arkansas lost to Sam Baggett and T. E. Hayden, both con- tests being in Austin. In the University debates to determine the teams, Wood won the 35100 W. E. Pope prize, Francis the F6100 Delta Sigma Rho prize, and Jerome Crossman the 3550 Stelfox prize. Equally successful were the intercollegiate orators. Jerome K. Crossman won the Evans Contest and the 5550 Major Evans prize. earning the privilege to represent the University in the State Oratorical Contest. Meeting the strongest schools in the state at the contest at Ft. Worth, Crossman returned victorious to Varsity with the 3575 state prize. Selected to represent the University in the Intercollegiate Peace Contests. Robert M. Field defeated all district schools in the meet at San Marcos and won the final state meet at liieligon. I-le was awarded third place in the Southern Intercollegiate Peace Contest held in a ama. The Speakers' Club won the Wozencraf t intersociety debate cup for the second successive year. Warren Dale. Albert Johnson and Jube Parten composed the team. The Freshman declamation contest and the 525 Wilmot prize were taken by Julien Elfenbein.
