In the Special Olympics there is nev- er a loser Every athlete is a winner in our hearts. ln the Special Olympics program mentally retarded people are encouraged to try and to participate in the events. This support helps to im- prove their self esteem and to gain con- fidence in their ability to perform and achieve. The Special Olympics program is totally funded by contributions and is sponsored by the Ioseph I? Kennedy y Foundation. The program started in 1968 and now there are around fifty- five nations with Special Olympic pro- grams. ln the United States each state has a chapter The aim of the Tennessee Special Olympics is to see that these special people do not miss the play, the compe- tition, or the feeling of success. The Tennessee Special Olympics program is a year-round program that begins at the local level in the school, school dis- tricts, cities and counties. Competition is open to anyone that is mentally re- tarded and at least eight years of age. Each county in Tennessee belongs to a Special Olympics area. The Special Olympics first came to UTM in the 1975-1976 academic year Now, UTM is the headquarters for area seven. Betty Giles, director of womens athletics at UTM, is the area seven co- ordinator Area seven consists of seven counties: Weakley, Lake, Obion, Henry, Benton, Carroll and Gison. The money that funds the games that are held at UTM comes from contributions from UTM fraternities, sororities and orga- nizations. The local residents and mer- chants also make donations. UTM stu- dents and staff take time out from their daily routines to help at the games. 220 Special Olympics
