BERLIN is associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sci- ence at The johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a leading authority in the study and treatment of sexual disorders and sex offenders. He has been an invited partici- pant to White House and United States Sen- ate conferences on sexual abuse and violence. Dr. Berlin has taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Fordham University and Dal- housie University. DR. MELVIN L. DE FLEUR holds an en- dowed chair in the S.I. Newhouse School of public Communications, Syracuse Universi- ty. A sociologist with a special interest in the media, he taught at five major universities before his appointment at Syracuse this fall. He has received awards for his teaching, and has published textbooks in mass communica- tion and social problems. He has twice taught in Argentina as Fulbright professon lecturing and publishing in both Spanish and English. 210 Speakers 5 i'ikk DR. S. GAYLEN BRADLEY is dean of the School of Basic Health Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University. After earning advanced degrees from Northwestern Uni- versity, he held teaching appointments at the University of Minnesota and Virginia Com- monwealth. He has had numerous appoint- ments as consultant for the pharmaceutical industry and as visiting scientist here and abroad, and his research has produced over one hundred scientific papers in the field of microbiology, immunology, and genetics. LEE SMITH, a graduate of Hollins College, is a writer and teacher of fiction. Her sixth novel, Family Linen, was published in 1985. She also has published numerous short sto- ries, including a collection titled Cakewalk, published in 1981. She received the North Carolina Award for Literature in 1984. Ms. Smith now holds the position of associate professor and writer-in-residence at North Carolina State University, and is active as a director of writing workshops around the country. DR. NATHAN A. SCOTT who is Williami Kenan, Ir., Professor of Religious Studies i the University of Virginia, is the author of ll books and contributor to 40 others in religio philosophy, and literature. Formerly editor, The journal of Religion and The Christii Scholar, he is immediate past president of tl American Academy ofReligion. Dr. Scott hi taught at The University of Chicago, Hoi ard University and Indiana University. ROBERT BLY is a poet, founder and editor a poetry magazine, and commentator on t male experience in America. His volumes poems, including The Light Around the Bo Iwhich won the National Book Awardl a collections of his translations have made h one of America's best-known poets. JR. GERHARD L. WEINBERG is a histori- n specializing in the foreign policy of Hit- ?r's Germany. Two of his books on that sub- ect have won prizes. He has published five ther books on World War ll affairs, and iany articles in German and English Lan- uage journals. Now holding an endowed hair of history at the University of North farolina, he lzas also been Fulbright Profes- or at Bonn University. DR. RUSSELL D. BUHITE, a professor of history at the University of Oklahoma, has specialized in American diplomatic history in his teaching, and in the Second World War and postwar period in his research. He is the author of five books and a number of articles on American policy towards China and other Asian countries, and has just published a book on the Yalta agreement. His current re- searclz focuses on the concept ofpreventative war in the period of 1945 to 1952 THE ACADEMIC SPEAKERS PROGRAM is designed to enrich tlze academic program and learning environment of the University by bringing outstanding scholars, writers, and performers to campus to present lectures and workshops under the sponsorship of various academic units. Speakers who best represent particularfields of study interpret their areas of expertise for the University audience as well as for members of the local and regional community. THE HONORS SEMINAR PROGRAM, like the Scholars Program with which it shares facilities and administrative staff, is designed to attract academically talented students to the campus wlzo are eligible for full-tuition scholarships in the freshmen year and for workshops in succeeding years. Honors Seminar students participate in at least one two-day seminar led by a distinguished visiting speaker.
