Football UTM's footballers managed an exciting, although medi- ocre, three wins and six losses slate. Injuries and inex- perience were season-long problems, and an irregular schedule kept football-fever from causing more than a mild epidemic in West Tennessee. The Volunteers' three victories included a 7-6 squeaker over OVC Austin Peay, a 31-6 passing bombardment of Parsons College, and a 25-9 homecoming belting of Pensa- cola Navy, The Orange and White battled McNeese State C17-15j and Jacksonville State Q22-205, two tough football teams, down to the final gun before ending up on the short end of the scores. Only Florence State was able to force Vol fans out of the stands when they battered UTM by a 51-7 count in the season finale. Both the Volunteer offense and defense had their mo- ments of glory, but the lack of consistency in getting it all together often kept pace-setting performances from reaching the scoreboard. Outstanding individual efforts by young newcomers to the Vol lineups leave the UTM football future ontimistic, since the team will return with a veteran Havor in the fall. 95

The spectacle of an autumn football Saturday and the drudg- ery and grind of a rainy Tuesday after- noon practice. , It is injuries. A shoulder separation, a cracked vertabra in the neck, and fifty pairs of bruised forearms. It is the locker room, or the bonfire, or a long bus ride.
