DIPLOMATS The University of Tampa Diplomats is a new service organization, comprised of students, which promotes communication within the University and with the community. The Student Affairs and Alumni Offices co-sponsor this program, which creates opportuni- ties for student-alumni interaction and provides service for many official functions within the University setting. The Diplomats promote the University’s mission and spirit, and take great pride in serving the community. The Diplomats have been highly visible and cctive within the community, serving at Chamber of Commerce meetings, Forecast '84, the Hall of Fame Banquet and Minaret Society Dinners. The first major commitment of the Diplomats fell upon them at the beginning of the year. All 24 Diplomats eagerly took on the job of orienting students and parents to the University and its functions. This program titled V.I.P. became one of the most successfully received orientation programs ever offered at U.T. Projects such as Parent’s Weekend, Homecoming and various other alumni activities filled the schedules of the Diplomats, throughout the year. Although the position of a Diplomat is voluntary, many Diplomats feel that experience they receive in human relation skills, communications, skills, organizing and scheduling will be valuable to them in the future as well as the present. Furthermore, the Diplomats meet University alumni and other University supporters, thereby establishing beneficial contacts within the community. 2C DIPLOMATS

EXCEL The University's new Expanded Cuniculum for Excellence in Leadership EXCEL, got off to an overwhelmingly good start as it kicked off it’s first year. The program is the first of it's kind, not only at the University but also in the entire nation. The University's EXCEL Program is based on the belief that leadership skills and qualities can be developed, and that the educational mission of the University can be furthered by making available to students a quality program for developing these skills and qualities. The program provides a comprehensive, rigorous program of leadership development activities for student leaders and potential leaders on the University of Tampa campus. There are three stages to the program, which will be phased-in over a three year period. Out of the initial group participating in the Basic Leadership Curriculum (1st year) about 30 students will chosen to take the Advanced Curriculum (2nd year), and from that group, 5-7 students will be selected to participate in the Applied Leadership phase (3rd year). Advancement will be based on (a) satisfactory completion of cuniculum, (b) high level of interest in continuing in the program, (c) selection by the EXCEL governing committee. Basis Leadership Curriculum: A review of all aspects of leadership development, with emphasis on immediate, practical applications in a campus setting. Topics will center around the issues of being a leader, understanding, assessing, and motivating a group, and the setting and accomplishing of goals. Advanced Curriculum: A more intensive, in-depth study of leadership with emphasis on group dynamics and communication skills. Advanced groups will function as a planning and problem solving team, applying knowledge and skills to University issues Applied Leadership: A leadership Internship , in which students help plan, coordinate and present the EXCEL program to basic and advanced groups, and present special programs to other interested student groups. Presenters are drawn from leadership areas both on the University campus and from the Tampa business and professional community. Topics are presented through field trips, lectures, discussions, small group activities, special educational and social events and off campus retreats.
