Amidst the music of Tom Gribbon and the Salt Water Cowboys, students enjoyed the tastes of Tampa which featured delicacies from a variety of area restaurants. This year, entertainment was again pro- vided by student organization fund raising booths benefitting the United Way. Booths ranged from a kissing jail to a spud toss to the ever popular dunking booth. Master of Ceremonies for the annual Unit- ed Way auction. Dr. Bob Birrenkott. managed to raise over 3000 dollars for the charity. Thanks to UT students, this year's donation was the largest ever. The emotional and very physical victory gave the Spartans a 1 6-0 record on the season, kept alive their NCAA record consecutive game winning streak at 34 games, and allowed them to retain their number 9 overall ranking in the nation. UT's game-winning goal came in the 77th minute of play off the foot of Hans Olofsson, courtesy of a Keith Fulk take-down in the penalty area. Olofsson neatly placed the penalty kick into the far left corner of the net past USF goal keeper Rainer Kuhn. The score was Olofsson's fifth goal of the season. The dork cloud emerged on Nov. 20 when UT hosted the Sunblozera of Florido International University (FIU) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division two Southern Regional Soccer Final. Although the Spartan's 1 SS2 season ended on this day. the memories of the year will flicker in the minds of many. The 1 9S2 Spartans were giont killer, knocking off Division One and NAIA titians Quincy College. Alabama ASM. William and Mary, and North Carolina. The 1 982 Spartans were also record setters. NCAA style. A 34 consecu- tive game winning streak. Che longest in recent NCAA history, can also be added to the 82 Spartan soccer resume. Add to that, college soccer champions of the City of Tampa, which resulted from their 1 -O victory over the University of South Florida in the third annual Mayor's Cup. Earlier in the year' the pros came calling for two select Spartans. Both Peter Johonocon and Mike Fell were chosen by professional soccer teams of the Major indoor Soccer League (MlSL). The North American Soccer League (NASD draft comes on Dec. 14. and who knows. Christmas may come early for other Spartans as well. So the season hoc ended with 1 9 wins and 2 locoes. Tom Graham. M.ke Fall. Peter Johansson, and Mike Lee have to soy goodbye. The nation knows that Jay Miller breeds fine soccer players at the University of Tempo. They'll be looking at us again next year. C.W. Expanding its scope to include such regulars as Campus Clips, Police Beat, Doonesbury, Garfield, Bloom County and Kritike, The Minaret had a new look to correspond to the growing demands of the university. Issues ranging from the minarets and the bimester to student apathy and the economy were debated on the new Opinion page. Important news concerning UT and other areas relative the university were covered to keep students aware of what's going on. Due to increased advertising revenues. The Minaret had larger papers than ever before, many of which were splashed with color (rarely used in the past). The Minaret continued its dedication to excellence and was recognized by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association with a Gold Medalist Certificate (first place) in October. 1 76 Bryon Holz EdltorlnChlof Duncan White News Editor Dan Springer Asst. Now is usually a time of reflection upon things past and expectation about things to come. As a member of the class of 1983, you have witnessed and been involved with substantial change at UT. There has been greatly increased participation by students in the total life of the University: its governing process, academic pro- grams, extracurricular activities, and campus em- ployment. Student opinions have been a factor in the nature of bimester calendar implementation, evaluations of courses and faculty, the formula- tion of academic grading system proposals, and the preparation of institutional budgets. Student efforts have led to new levels of achievement in athletics such as soccer and swimming, to the Bay Day clean-up tradition, to the formation of new fraternities and sororities, and to more intensive attention to intellectual pursuits. Student needs have made computer science the fourth largest major in its first year, led to the opening of the new SCOPE office dealing with part-time jobs and career opportunities, brought into being a student auxiliary security force, and helped frame the plans for a new sports complex. Student talents have contributed significantly to the changing identity of UT as an academic center, helped to attract major gifts for endowed scholarships and athletics facilities, amplified the need for the new honors program, and created the impetus for the increasingly rich and diverse program of extra-curricular activities. Throughout your college career at UT, Tampa has continued to thrive as what best-selling au- thor John Naisbitt called one of the great new cities of opportunity in America. come. Good luck and Godspeed. Sincerely, Richard D. Cheshire President of the University March, 1983 Whether your plans are to stay in the area or to seek your livelihood elsewhere, all of us on the faculty and staff of the University wish you only the best. Please stay in touch. Let us know what you are thinking and doing. Congratulations Class of '83 251-1534 OR 251-1576 206 J ! i 207 Looking back at the last four years, the class of 1 903 has witnessed considerable change and transition. Remember that hot day in late August when you first arrived on campus? It seemed like everytime you turned around, people with funny letters on their shirts were ready to help with lug- gage. placement testing, campus tours, and regis- tration lines. And the bimester, ... it was just an idea. If they only knew the reaction there would be! The popular spot after the RAT was The White Way . Through the hard work, determination, and faith of a few girls, the sorority system was re-introduced to the University Community. Now. four years later, the Bimester calendar is a reality. We are the upperclassmen who run around with the letters on our shirts. The Greek system was strengthened by the re-birth of two fraterni- ties and the chartering of a brand new one. In addition, three sororities have sprung out of Alpha Delta Gamma; the first. The Rat and parties have survived, but the new late spots are the Press Box, (I want my M. T. V.). The Chatter Box and the Marker. Change is what our lives are made of. To the class of '83, Good luck and Go For It! Gregory J. lovanna Editor, 1 983 Moroccan I
