khe year 1959 arrived, and so did the fifth President of U.T., Dr. David Delo. Although the first two years of Delo's Presidency were marked by shakey times, the school’s leader seemed strong and determined. The ac- complishments made in 1962 will always be remembered by the people of U.T. Dr. Delo ap- pointed his first staff of administrators: three men who remain at the University today were part of this staff (Dr. Walker, Dr. Speronis, and Dr. Sliz). The University Union and Howell Hall were added to the campus. Plant Hotel was renovated, and the Western Civilization wing was built. Plant Hotel became known now as Plant Hall. McKay Auditorium was acquired. In 1969, ground was broken for the Merl Kelce Library. he 1970’s rolled around, and there was a stronger trend towards academic excellence. The Marine Science program was created. In June of 1971, David Delo retired as President, and D. B. Owens became the sixth President of the University. During this decade, greater financial support was needed and so the Minaret Society was formed. In 1972, the Fighting Spartans' Football Team went 10-2 and then won the Tangerine Bowl against Kent State. The hero of the team was a man named John Matuszek, a defensive lineman who, in 1973, became the 1 N.F.L. draft pick. Two other popular U.T. events, Harold’s Club and Oktoberfest began in this year. Students in the land of U.T., however, had mixed emotions. They were happy because ground had been broken for a swimming pool, but were saddened in 1975 when varsity football was eliminated. In 1977, President Owens resigned, and soon Dr. Richard D. Cheshire was ap- pointed to the position.
