vAa votou. 0| O2 jU-T- 4- 'University of Jampa; 50th Anniversary UT History 1 ... in a far off land known as Tampa, there was a man named Frederick Spaulding. Mr. Spaulding had a dream; it was of higher educa- tion in the land of Tampa. A dream is only a dream until the work that is needed to make it a reality is complete; so Mr. Spaulding founded and chaired a committee that was to bring about his dream of higher education. In October of 1931, the University of Tampa became Mr. Spaulding’s dream. The University of Tampa was only a Junior College at first and because of lack of space, its first home was the Hillsbourough High School’s Library. Mr. Spaulding became the first President and Paul Strout was the first Dean at the University. The original faculty, which numbered twelve, was hard working and showed potential. The new school decided it needed a sports program in the land, so a Basketball program was created. The school now needed a nickname, so the name the Fighting Spartans was chosen because the then-rival St. Petersburg Junior College's name was the Trojans. The football team was to arrive the following year. The future looked bright and we were getting set to grow. UT History 3 i'he land of U.T. was growing restless. The officials of the school decided that if expansion was going to become reality, they needed a permanent home for the school. The school set their sights on the then defunct Henry Bradley Plant Hotel, which at the time of its construction in the 1890’s was the most expensive hotel in the world. They decided that it would make a majestic and historic home for the school. The city was brought into the picture and after some convinc- ing, they decided to give the school a lease on the hotel for one dollar a year. The eye-catching effect of the original thirteen silver minarets gave the school a mystic mideast look. The school officially moved in on August 2, 1933, and had their first registration in the fall of 1933. This year was also historic because it marked the first publication of the school paper, “The Minaret.” Into the year 1934, U.T. saw the creation of Fraternities and Sororities, plus the first graduating class, which numbered eight. 1930’s saw the origin of fraternities on campus, with Sigma Epsilon being one of the first. Plant Hall and the minarets become a symbol tor all UT affiliates. UT History 5 khe year 1959 arrived, and so did the fifth President of U.T., Dr. David Delo. Although the first two years of Delo's Presidency were marked by shakey times, the school’s leader seemed strong and determined. The ac- complishments made in 1962 will always be remembered by the people of U.T. Dr. Delo ap- pointed his first staff of administrators: three men who remain at the University today were part of this staff (Dr. Walker, Dr. Speronis, and Dr. Sliz). The University Union and Howell Hall were added to the campus. Plant Hotel was renovated, and the Western Civilization wing was built. Plant Hotel became known now as Plant Hall. McKay Auditorium was acquired. In 1969, ground was broken for the Merl Kelce Library. Students help break ground tor the University Union in 1962. 10 UT History President Delo cuts the cake at a 1965 Christmas Party. 1959 head majorette 1961 orientation pop rally 1961 Pajama Party UT History he 1970’s rolled around, and there was a stronger trend towards academic excellence. The Marine Science program was created. In June of 1971, David Delo retired as President, and D. B. Owens became the sixth President of the University. During this decade, greater financial support was needed and so the Minaret Society was formed. In 1972, the Fighting Spartans' Football Team went 10-2 and then won the Tangerine Bowl against Kent State. The hero of the team was a man named John Matuszek, a defensive lineman who, in 1973, became the 1 N.F.L. draft pick. Two other popular U.T. events, Harold’s Club and Oktoberfest began in this year. Students in the land of U.T., however, had mixed emotions. They were happy because ground had been broken for a swimming pool, but were saddened in 1975 when varsity football was eliminated. In 1977, President Owens resigned, and soon Dr. Richard D. Cheshire was ap- pointed to the position. This brings us up to date in the land of U.T___ John Matuszek and Dennis Fryzel show off «ho 1972 1970 Homecoming Queen candidate. 12 UT History 14 UT History What does the future hold lor the land of U.T.? This question can only be answered in time. With the beginning of the 1980’s, we see that there is strong concentration on academics — there is a new academic calendar and a new academic approach called “partnership learning.” The University is constantly growiqg and expanding. The sports program is back on its feet again, and although there]is no football team, the Spartan Soccer Team showed us they could pick up the slack and win the National Championship. The plans that exist for the new sports complex are promising, and soon intercollegiate men’s basketball will return to our land. The first fifty years of the University were good ones, although shakey at times. We can now look back on the Golden Era in the land of U.T. and smile: we survived tough times and can look forward to the future with confidence. As our Alma Mater states: U.T. is steadfast and true. — C. J. Blitzer Ml UT Htetocy 15 UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA: 50th ANNIVERSARY story composed by C. J. Bills, Resolutions, Ammendments Government and Organization.” Those were the keys to the 1981-82 Student Government Association. Many new parliamentary procedures were implemented, and though representatives were at first overwhelmed by the process, they soon realized that the procedures were essential for a strong government. The executive board served a dual purpose: programming and student govern- ment. President Ralph Gonzalez, who was ultimately responsible for all changes, was also responsible for overseeing all aspects of government. Vice-President Bob Pette was in charge of programming. Executive board members, each of whom was responsible for a different committee, were individually contracted to guarantee superior work for their fellow students. The formation of new committees strengthened the Student Government’s powers. The Academic Affairs Committee surveyed students concerning the im- plementation of the bimester, researched plagurism, and looked seriously into the University Mission Statement. The Comuter Representative and committee voiced the concerns of those students who travel daily to the University. The Resident Life Representative and committee dealt with the concerns of those students residing on campus. A Press Secretary kept the University community informed on Student Government happenings. The Speakers and Lecturers Committee was brought back, and an Appropriations Committee was formed. All of the branches of this year’s Student Government worked together to pro- vide one of the most organized and optimistic aspects of University life. 144 student government student government 145 1982 MOROCCAN The 1982 Moroccan stall has been one of the most pro- ductive ever. More students were directly involved in the building of this issue than any other. The 50th Anniversary theme was chosen easily. This is a historical year for UT, and it is the responsibility of the yearbook to give a pictorial representation of the past, the present, and the future goals, ideals, and achievements of the University. There was the national championship in soccer. The $1 million com- puter grant, largest corporate grant ever made in Tam- pa. The announcement of four new computer science majors. The restoration and rcoponing of the beautiful David Falk Theater. McNiff Center, and the new outdoor basketball courts on Plant Field. The campus visits of scholar Amitai Etzionl. commentator Irving R. Levine, the National Shakespeare Company. Pulitizer Prize-winning poet Richard Eberhardt. The arrival of eleven promising new members of the faculty. The beginning of a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and the first class of 45 students. Record-high levels of support from the public, and more publicity about the Univorsity than anyone can remember. It was a year of struggle, as well. Many of us en- countered difficulties with the mixed schedulo of semoster and bimester courses. Many of us were con- cerned about our response to new state law dealing with moral questions on campus. Questions about the availability of federal student assistance and the possibilities of alternatives weighed on the minds of many. Through all of our comings and goings, doings and un- doings. there seem to me to be several identifiable points worthy of attention. One is that wo are enjoying some notable program successes, examples being soc- cer and computers. Two Is that we are receiving more public attention in the media both because of what we are doing and what we aro trying to do. Three is that we are living through major change In the atmosphere on campus. Four is that we are living in the midst of major change all around us as the City of Tampa continues its dynamic growth. Five is that we are experiencing more rapid shifts of enrollment patterns than we expected as we continue our policies on academic standards and service to the community — there are more students because of the increase In part-time continuing educa- tion enrollment but there are fewer full-time bac- calaureate enrollment. All of this is requiring more than a little adjustment on the institution's part as well as on the part of most all of us — students, faculty, and staff — at the University, if we are sometimes annoyed by inconveniences. I hopo we can also be encouraged by our continuing progress as a Univorsity In a period of substantial national reassessment of higher education. Good luck and Godspeed! Sincerely. Richard D. Celebration began at 11:00 am and continued through the early evening. German hats, dark beer, and the Taste of Tampa booths all added newness to this UT tradition. The Stu- dent Government Association, under the direction of Special Events Com- mittee chairman Scott Laramy, spon- sored the celebration, and the Inter Fraternity Council sponsored the an- nual slave Auction, where over $2,500.00 was raised for the UT United Way Fund. Entertainment by the Busch Gardens Festhaus Band. Circuit, and Stuart Tussing provided a variety of music. There was something for everyone. Strong student par- ticipation has again made getting Oktoberfested memorable. These pages purchased at the annual IFC Spon- sored Slave Auction. Gallagher and Tom Chapin A varied night of entertainment was provided on September 14, 1981 by singer-songwriter Tom Chapin and corn- median. Gallagher. Although student attendance at the performance was not as high as expected, the show was fantastic. Tom Chapin, brother of the late Harry Chapin, played before the audience of 732. His modern country music kept the crowd alive, and his sing-a-longs invited participation from everyone. The only somber moment in the show was when Chapin performed one of his brothers' songs. Gallagher kept the crowd laughing constantly as he showed off his Gallagher Doll, automatic lasso, rape siren, and solitare ping-pong paddles. The show was ended with an actual demonstration of the new Sledge-O-Matic. It dices, chops, and smashes anything in sight, especially apples and watermelons!!! k 202 S.G.A o Watermelon and Stewart Tussing An outdoor Bar-B-Que was held for all students on October 2, 1981. Everyone was entertained by the Stuart Tussing Band, as well as by the watermelon eaters! A watermelon eating contest proved to be quite messy, but the students with the fastest mouths triumphed. Congrats to Fren- chy,” Dave Lowry, and Bill MacEvoy, for placing first, second, and third place respectively. S.G.A 203 J4omecoming 81 UD -M- VS3 This year's homecoming soc- cer game was a fierce battle between the UT Spartans and the USF Bulls. The rivalry match drew hundreds of fans into the UT Grandstands. The game, known as the Mayor's Cup Tournament, ended in a 1-1 tie. During a grueling overtime period, both of the teams were plagued by injuries. The final score, after both ten minute periods, was 2-2. Both school names go on the Mayor’s Cup Trophy, but, since they won the tournament last year, the Bulls get to keep the trophy. 204 homecoming JJo 'omecotmng (?ourt Nancy AM. escorted by Tom PadoH Beth Bronson, escorted by Jack Cannavagglo Anita Daniels, escorted by Dave Queen Roxann GaMn, escorted by John Lowth Corrlne Glasgow, escorted by Kaslnathan Perumal Shelly Havas, escorted by Tim Rovnanlk Jean Marie Magi, escorted by Bryon Holts Michede Manzeba. escorted by Vlnny Falcone Kathleen O’Netu. escorted by Victor BoboJs Beth Rath, escorted by BID McEvoy Unde Smeraldl. escorted by AJan Charles Use To'Unger. escorted by Bob Bobmer 1981 Homecoming Queen: Beth Bronson, sponsored by Phi Delta Theta homecoming 205 207 198-2 3 1872 07040 4681 ■ H S (.Lvo -iAv a'cLf fAtL 982. On the U.T. campus there is an air of politics that can be seen in a students everyday life, whether it be an election on a campus wide basis or in a smaller group or organization; someone is always politicing for some sort of position. The Student Government here at Tampa U. is the largest political organization on campus, and this year is under the leadership of President Jacques Pauchey, and Vice-President Kirby Ryan. Together these two individuals will be in charge of overseeing all Bills, Resolutions, and Amendments that go through our political system. Student Government is divided into different standing committees that plan and suggest various activities for the student body through budget appropriations. Use your Student Government, its there for you, the student. Take a trip up to the second floor of the University Union and check out U.T. politics in the works. 1982-1983 Executive Board President: Jacques Pauchey Vice-President: Kirby Ryan Secretary: Rana Ann Holz Treasurer: Paula Kendros Attorney General: Bill Charnock Senior Senators: Brian Russell Bill Billig Junior Senators: Lori Sue Mattevi Paul Duncan Sophomore Senators: David Frick Brian Cummings The Minaret: Editor-in-chief: Bryon Holz Assistant Editor: Jody Grombach The Moroccan: Editor-in-Chief: Greg lovanna Assistant Editor: Dorene “Smitty Smith Quilt: Editor-in-Chief: Christopher Hagblcom Student Activities Advisor: Dave Jackson IFC and Panhellenic Council 1981-82 Councils The moment one arrives on the University of Tampa campus, you are greeted by members of fraternities and sororities. There are three national sororities, and seven national fraternities with chapters on this campus. Each organization has its own identity and image, as well as policies and procedures. Two governing bodies on campus coordinate and officiate all of the workings of each of these organizations: The Panhellenic Council, and the Interfraternity Council. The Panhellenic Council is the governing body of all national sororities. Council members are responsible for planning sorority rush, fund raisers, parties, and philanthropic activities. The Panhel- lenic Council Executive Board for this school year are: President, Laura Reed of Delta Gamma; Vice-President Maureen Merrigan of Delta Zeta; and Treasurer Secretary Dani Legault of Alpha Chi Omega. The Interfraternity Council is the governing body of all national fraternities. Like the Panhellenic Council. IFC sponsors many events on campus. All men are invited to speak freely to Council members and choose the fraternity that best suits them. The IFC Executive Board for this school year includes: President Mike Norton of Pi Kappa Phi; Vice-President John Voistock of Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Treasurer John Kelly of Pi Kappa Phi; Secretary Greg lovanna of Phi Delta Thete; and Social Chairman Tom Padell of Alpha Epsilon Pi. The Greek office is located on the second floor of the University Union. All students are invited to visit and sec exactly what Greek life is all about. Fraternities Alptja Epsilon pi Founded in 1970, Alpha Epsilon Pi has a long history of togetherness. After the loss of our house in 1979, we hit some very low points. But with this years rush of 18 pledges, AEPi is back in the U.T. limelight once again. Fall 1981 brought our largest rush in U.T. history. Many events of the year highlighted the Social Calender including, the Open Campu Heineken Party and the Fort DeSoto crab cookout. Kappa Kappa psi t Kappa Kappa Psi is the oldest honorary Fraternity on Cam- pus. They were founded in 1946 and have been in opera- tion ever since. They recently celebrated their 40th birth- day, been in pep bands at sports events, been ushers for the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony, v on best participation award in the Margaret McNiff Memorial Fund Home Run Derby, Had a Campus wide party with Theta Chi and worked for the United Way. perstjing Kifles Pershing Rifles were founded at U.T. in 1970 as company T-16 by USA Colnel Walt Turner, v ho is now the Director of Admissions here at U.T. The purpose of the organization is foster a spirit of friendship and scholarship among men and women sharing common goals. The PR’s sponsored the Go West Party with Delta Zeta, are College Bowl Champs, and are Intramural Football Fraternity League Champs. Ma Beta Tau The University of Tampa chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity has added a unique twist to Greek life. The Zeebs” as they are called at UT, are responsible for sponsoring the campus-wide parties with live entertain- ment. Members of Zeta Beta Tau hold offices in the Inter- fraternity Council, and other campus organizations. The little sisters of the fraternity play an important role in the government and operation of the fraternity, as well as in the Greek intramural program. plji Belta ©ffeta Florida Theta of Phi Delta Theta was founded on Feb. 16, 1978. In three years of existance they won best Fraternity on campus all three years and the highest award (Kansas City Trophy) that the National gives. Over the years the Phi Delts have sponsored many events for the University and community. pi appa pfjt Founded as a National Fraternity at U.T. on April 23,1955, Pi Kappa Phi is the oldest general Greek Letter College Fraternity on campus. Special events of the year included the famous Pi Kapp theme parties, including the 27th annual Gasparilla Eve Party. The Pi Kapps have placed many brothers in high leadership positions on campus including President of Inter-Fraternity Council, and Editors positions on the School Yearbook. Many of the Pi Kappa Brothers played on the U.T. Greek All-Star Football Team for the Bud-Bowl, Including stars Bill Gieseking and Chuck Blitzer. The Pi Kapps also won the Lite Beer All American Tug-of-War for the third year in a row. §igma Alplja Spsilon Sigma Alpha Epsilon encountered a year full of changes— new people, a new home, new friends and so forth. The new character of the Fraternity is best exemplified in the person of Mark Sotak. Brother Mark suffered paralysis from an auto accident, yet he did not loose his will to recover or succeed. SAE had numerous Brothers in lead- ership positions throughout the University. The SAE's also did well in Sports placing four Brothers on the Bud-Bowl Team. Topping the Social Calender was the Second Annu- al Gone with The Wind Party, held in the fall. Sororities Alplja CCCtfl (©mega Alpha Chi Omega is a social sorority whose purpose is to promote the true spirit of sisterhood; to develop through personal effort, a high moral and mental standard; and to advance the appreciation and practice of the allied arts among its members. In the fall semester, AXO's triumphed by placing 2nd in the Tug-of War, 2nd and 3rd in Intramural Ping-Pong. 1 st. 2nd, and 3rd in the Eight Ball Tourney, and held the highest G.P.A. among sororities. The highlight of the Spring semester was the installation of the Gamma Pi Colony as a Chapter on Jan. 9th, 1982. Celebration began on Jan. 7th and culminated in a campus reception on Jan. 10th. The Gamma Pi Chapter is proud of the fact that it took the shortest amount of time to become a chapter of any other AXO colony. The Founding President of the Chapter was Shelly Havas. The Highlight of the Year was when the Sorority won Best Sorority on Campus for the 1981-82 year. Delta itmuna The local sorority Delta, was founded in Jan. Of 1980. In Jan. of 1981, Delta was inducted as a Delta Gamma Col- ony. On April 12,1981, Delta Gamma initiated the colony as its 107th chapter. Some of the activities they were involved in were: Anchor Splash Weekend (Oct. 16-18), Tuck in Service, Hawaiian Party with Kappa Sigma of USF, and the Lite Beer Tug-of War, of which they were Champs. Delta Zeta Delta Zeta became a pledge colony on Jan. 18,1981. They were installed as a chapter on Oct. 10,1981, renewing the Delta Beta Chapter. The purpose of their organization is to unite its members in the bonds of sincere and lasting friendship, to stimualte one another in pursuit of Knowl- edge. to promote the moral and social culture of its mem- bers and to develop plans for guidance and unity in action; objects worthy of the highest aim and purpose of associ- ated effort. Delta Zeta held service projects for the Galludet College for the Deaf and sponsored the Go West Party. BUD BOWL 1981 The 5th annual Bud Bowl — Greek-vs-Greek — UT-vs- USF — was played at the USF Soccer Field. UT felt they had prepared the best team possible to capture their first ever Bud Bowl victory. Taking a 13-0 lead early in the game. UT felt their hard work had paid off. However, the dreams soon turned to nightmares as the USF offense picked apart UT's defense, and the offense, not being able to produce, allowed the opponent to toughen up and come up with the big plays. UT lost again (44-26) — but not without a fight and a lot of fun. New friends were made, jersey's were exchanged, and the parties lasted until dark. The MVP for UT was Bill Fountain, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Other team members included: Fran Allan, John Dobbie, Andy Ferrigno — of Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Bill Gieseking, Rod Cooper, Joe Brandine, Chris Pastina, C.J. Blitzer. Mike Norton, Kent Abbey — of Pi Kappa Phi; Jim Huff. Jacques Pauchey, Tracy Diel, Bruce Roberts — of the Pershing Rifles; Ed Hill. Louis Kuiken, Art Machulsky, Joe Rich, Scott Baxter, Kevin Dec, Brian Hughes — of Phi Delta Theta; Dan Murray, Kory Krucher, and Dan Lee were the coaches. I.F.C.
