i o 0 • Vo v u Moroccan 1979 leadership Week was proclaimed as a New Beginning for Ut, commemorating its heritage and establishing new goals for its future. Word went forth to all points North, South, Bast and West. Leaders in Commerce, the Arts, Science and Government flocked to the city to hail the new Prince of Ut. The Inauguration day saw the Hall of McKay buzzing with eager anticipation. The Prince declared war on Academic Lethargy, proposing a major educational reform to be dubbed Partnership Learning. Sir Saatkamp was given charge of this task in the Council of Collegium. The new Prince, Richard of Ut, met with Sir Calandriello and the Council of Undergraduates. He spoke with the Duke of Ford and Once upon a time, in the Land of Ut, a great and noble Bard went among the People to issue a message of good tidings and joy. Come one, come all, a sign from on higher the Inauguration is set for Richard Cheshire! The People of Ut rejoiced at this news and prepared for the festivities. By official decree, one week was set aside for the ceremony. 2 Golden Chain. The Change of Seasons saw an array of discussions, debates, questions and comments. Richard of Ut maintained his policy of Open Audiences and addressed all the People of Ut. I he Councils of Administration, Collegium and Scholars worked hard to produce a mighty and brave Program of Educ ation so that the land of Ut would be a noble place in which to live. This story, though not a fairy tale, does not, as yet, have a conclusion. No doubt, the People of Ut would like it to have a happy ending. They will face many trying problems and challenges, however, as the work to move forward continues. But the Leadership they possess is creative and fresh. The People of Ut are not amiss in their Hopes for a Bright Future. i 5 II Quiet! Or. Richard D. Cheshire. Or. Cheshire was horn August 12. 1936, in Mineola, long Island toleslie and Catherine Cheshire. During his high school years he became president ol his senior 11ass, a three year trac k jod field lettermjn, c apt jin ol the (ross country tejm jnda member ol the recordbreaking 1954 medley turn. In 1954 Cheshire received the National Alumni War Memory Scholarship lor his undergraduate studies at Colgate University. During his (our years at Colgate, Cheshire became a member ol 8hi (.amma Delta. was elec led president ol the leac bet's form and was captain ol the varsity track and field team. Cheshire graduated Irom ( olgate in 1958 with an A.B. degree. While working on his M.A. in education at Ihe University of New Hampshire, Cheshire married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Ann leans. After receiving his Ph.D. from New York University, Cheshire taught Am eric an history at Chatham High School in New jersey. Alter teaching at Chatham lor one year, Cheshire relumed to Colgate as Assistant to the Vice President. He then moved to Dickinson College j Direc tor ol Development. In 1967 Drew University made Cheshire Direr tor ol Community Relations. It was during this lime that Cheshire gained his reputation lor r perlite in university planning, funding, and community relations. In 1972 a financially unsound group called the New jersey Shakespeare festival elected Cheshire as their president. Although Cheshire hjd no previous theatre bac kground. he was successful in developing a program that pul the group in the black lor the lirst lime in years, today the New jersey Shakespeare festival is one of the premier groups in the northeast. In 1973 Colgate put Cheshire in c barge ol a live year S10 million lurid raising c ampaign. fhe multi-million dollar campaign goal was made five weeks helore the deadline. In Oc tuber 1977 Cheshire ac c epted the position ol president ol the University ol Tampa. Ihe new position, climate, and environment made a most significant change in Cheshire's lile. Dr. Cheshire feels that the presidency is more of a life than j job because it demands so muc h. But Roberta and I enjoy Ihe rewarding aspects and most ol all the people ol Ihe university and Ihe c ommunity. I think the dynamics of the university and Tampa Bay gives this area great potential As president, Cheshire is striving to inc orporate a program that will plac e students as partners in student life rather than spectators. Cheshire refers to this active participation in the learning program as “partnership learning. Cheshire believes that lampa is bee oming one of the most dynamic areas in Ihe c ountry and that Ul should he part of this trend. He is positive that UT can become Ihe top choice of higher learning and serve as a talent bank for lampa and other areas. 29 30 Table of Contents Seniors Classes Sports Organizations Creeks Administration Faculty Advertisements Memoriam mill 1 MHlllut SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS John Abu Zahid Alam John Albright Frederick Alf Jeff Allen Philip Ambrozy Suzanne Anderson Patti Andrews Hi lard Anguin Adeyemo Ash i mi Erkan Atrek Robert Bacher Lorraine Baracalt Jody Beattie William Beck Theresa Beiser John Bender Doreen Benson Jack Berdasco Richard Berman Alexis Bigelow Mark Bolhofner Robert Borrego Valorie Browndorf Tina Brancato James Budnick Anthony Calandriello John Calcanis Hope Caldwell Frank Calvi Peter Cammick Michael Cantor Xavier Cannella Linda Casazza Cary Cascella I ■ Karen Catel L isa Caterina lames Castano Bruce Chin Frank Cimato Mary Cochrane Victoria Collins Mary Compere Mary Contessa William Cooper Ted Costello William Counihan Bruce Cousins Nancy Cox ludith Cozzi Elizabeth Cunningham Kenny Daitch Louis Danielle Michael Dank berg Bruce Davis Steven Dawson Karen Day Sam DeFranco Edison Deleveaux Dean DeNegri Daniel Dengate Linda DeRosa Angel DisDier Ernest Dominguez Tina Dove Jerry Draluck Forrest Dray Mark Dubin Kenneth Dumas Anne Dunbar 8 Irene Durrance Paula Eberwine Claudius Effiom Cini England Nancy Eller Kimberly Ezzo Mary Ferguson Miriam Fisher Carry Flowers I odd Fogarty Cindy Friedman Susan Gan ia leffiey Gasser Clill Gelbard Tom Goller Rerun' Gillespie Gregory Gironda Bruce Goldberg lames Gordon Joseph Cray David Green Lori Greenspan Mary Griffin leffrey Grimner Roy Gu I ledge Cary Gunderson Kathleen Guran Tasha Hair Christine Hammerman Tam rah Hansborough Hunter Hansen Richard Harding Lise Harrington lames Haltnick Marcia Healy to Stephen Hedlund Susan Hehman Karen Hellings Carol Hinds David Horgan William Horn Pearl Huerta Sandra Hugh Richard Humiston John Hunstiger John Hunter Stuart llkowitz Lawrence Jellen Lucy Jordan Melissa Justice Steve Kahne Darlene Karmazin. Without this commitment, the team may fall short of its goals. This year, the determination of such players as Captains Dave Schultz and Chris Ogo, and seniors Jimmy Hallrick and Steve Williamson spurred the team to a 12-2 season. Hilliard Anguin and Ell Lutz certainly met their goals by scoring 12 apiec e. In fad, the Spartans c ame close to being chosen for the championships by ranking 5th in the south this season. Unfortunately, our leam was plagued with severe leg injuries. Senior Kic k liac her and sophomore Rich Bergold were among the 4 players sidelined in full leg casts. This years men's crew, under Coach Tom Feaster, forecast a challenging season with regattas in Miami, Jacksonville and our own President's Cup. Captain, Joe O'Neill and senior Jeff Crimner head this cast of experienced oarsmen and have previously won National Championships. Coach Feaster stales that in his four years at UT, this is the first season in which several members are upperclassmen. This experience, coupled with a zest for rowing, makes our c rew a suc cess. The women, who are coached by Dave Thomas, are in another building year. The program is c omprised primarily of freshman novices who should progress as their years at UI unfold. both men and women's crew are on the upswing and are ready to row. IIH SPIRITED SWIMMERS MAKE UP FOR SMALL TEAM Lit I TO RIGHT: Mall Fisher, Wendy Wrighi, |oc lee. Nit k Mooney Divers: Donna Maher and Chris Dunham The Spartan swim team made up for its lack of members with an abundance of spirit this year. These six determined swimmers took places in well over half the events of each meet. Despite their record of 0-11, there may be some All-Americans in the picture. One of these talented contenders is Joe Lee. Under the coaching of Bob Glenn, the Spartan swimmers hope to rate in the top 20of the NCAA titles. No matter how they rate, U.T. is proud to claim these athletes as our own. 121 row 1: Eddie Cowans, 8uddy Sacino, Dave Sklens, Frank Kamppen, Jeff Valenzano, Braulio Pardo, Jim Kellvir, Frank Yurchak, Joe Salantri, Jay McAndrcws; row 2: Andy Foza, Creg Sillery, Kevin Sullivin, Bob Cirsl, Kris Kelly, Butch Lyssin, Bill Counihan, Bob Kinckiner; row 3: Bill Austin. Despite their tough schedule, this young team ha: several outstanding members. James Budnick and Grej Sillary lead a pitching staff which deflated man opposing hitters. Bill Counihan and Kevin Sullivan wert also effective in checking the advances of the tougf Division 2 teams. The goal for this spring season is U earn a bid for the NCAA play-offs. The Women's Soccer team, coached by Dr. Howard Kratz, experienced a successful season due to a serious effort towards organization and a tremendously eager approach to the game by the athletes. There are many three year veterans who participated in the rough 20 game schedule this year. Geri Lash, Tina Dove and Suzanne Q. Thomas brought experience and optimism to the game. The team's future goal is to be included as a varsity team next year. With their ability, these girls will surpass their goals easily. GOLF TEAM The Golf Team, under the direction of Coach Jon Seavey, had a long, tough schedule packed with 30 intercollegiate match and 3 tournaments. Co-captains Brian Claarand Jon Swenson helped to provide the needed spirit for the team. All the members of this young team strive to be winners and show great potential for future seasons. YOUTH, TALENT, VICTORY Basketball is a sport which requires total team effort, as well as the individual skills that are needed for a winning team. The Lady Spartans have both, plus a great amount of team spirit which led them through the season. This season was tough after losing last year's senior scorers. Each girl gave all she had towards the team, regardless of the shortage of players. Judy Ward, Jane Castor, and Judy Vinski displayed courage and enthusiasm in the 19 scheduled games. These hard-working athletes competed with almost every college and university in the state and under the coaching of Anne Strusz, the Lady Spartans look forward to future winning seasons and this year foresees a young, talented team rising to victory. 130 IOP HOW Ilf I TO RIGHT: Claudcth forbin, Kerri Donnelly, Vivian Pavw n. With increased monies provided by the university administration. Student Council created new activities on campus — a major rock concert, The Ritz , formal recognition of Quilt , (campus literary magazine), and more funds allocated to both the Minaret and the Moroccan, in addition to Harold's Club, Oktoberfest, and all the rest of our activity success stories. 1978-1979 wasn't without its issues — it wasn't too long before the Collegium's discussion on Dr. Chesire's proposals on Partnership Learning and the 1 — 3 — 1 — 3 — 1 calendar were the campus wide focal point. On behalf of the Student Council, Cuy and I would like to thank all of those who contributed in making 1978-79 one of the most memorable years in the development of U.T. as truly a landmark of Learning. In his opening speech. President Caiandriello introduced the members of the Executive Council and discussed the basic organization and function of the student council. President Caiandriello explained that the system of government at UT consisted of two major elements: the Executive Council - composed of himself. Vice President. Attorney General. Secre- tary and Treasurer: and the General Assembly - composed of the class officers and the student representatives from the residence halls, clubs and other campus organizations as well as six student committees, each headed by a chairper- son responsible to the Executive Council. After his opening speech. Caiandriello introduced Dr. Carl Hite, dean of students, who spoko about the importance of participation in student govern- ment and the degree of accessibility students at UT have regarding participation in the decision making processes which affect them. In his talk on student involvement. Dean Hilo particularly noted that: The University of Tampa Is one of the only colleges in the U.S. that has student voting members on its policy making body. The Col- legium. Dean Hite went on to say that he felt this year would be a great one for UT students and as always, said: You will get out of this university what you put Into It. Speaking of student participation, many of the six committees of the General Assembly still need members. The following is a brief break- down of the activities for which each of these committees is responsible: COMMITTEES —Proposal - appropriation of funds, revenue 3Mring (deciding who gets what, when and how). _ Sgec|al Events - Campus parties. Octoberfest Cheshire IS A Good Year To Come By CAROL HINDS Minaret Staff Writer better than we were a year ago and not as good as we will be next year. began Dr. Richard Cheshire in his report on the State of the University to faculty, staff, and administration on September 12. 9:30 a.m. in McKay Auditorium. In his State of the University Report, Dr. Cheshire spoke of some of the achievements and improvements the University of Tampa has made in the last year. One of the achieve- ments Is the increase in enrollment. The freshman class has increased from last year's instructor the responsibility for teaching and learning. Gradually as the students be- come more involved in the learning process, classroom lectures become only supple- mental. Dr. Cheshire feels that when stu- dents are required to become active in the learning process the knowledge becomes more a part of them so that they do not forget what they have learned after the final exam, as happens all tco often. Another goal Dr. Cheshire mentioned is to place the University of Tampa on a 1-3-1-3-1 430 new freshmen to Uiis ye 's enrojiment caj odar. By ANTHONY DeSORMIER Minaret Staff Writer Being from Massachusetts, and being both a baseball addict and an avid Red Sox tan. I have run into the thing that I fear most: Yankee fans. In case you happen to be blind, deal, or just not into baseball, you know that there is no greater rivalry in any sport (except maybe, the Dallas-Washing- ton rivalry in the NFL). I was in my glory when the Sox had a 15 game lead; I knew, oven though they had dropped five games off that lead, that they wouldn’t lose. I never expected that the Sox would lose six out of seven games to the Yankees and would fall two and a hall games back. Now I’m eating my words. But at this writing, the Sox 3re only one gome bock and haven’t given up. Go Sox! As lor all my Yankee adversaries, it’s still close! The movie last weekend was Neil Simon's Good- bye Girl. It was one of the best films of 1977. The movie was all if was cracked up to be and more. Anyone who missed it: you blew it! The movie coming up.this weekend is Mot Brooks' comedy. Blazing Saddles.' I highly recommend this movie to anyone who's not allergic to laughter. Remember, any Student Council event needs your support to continue presenting you with those events. As president, Cheshire is striving to incorporate a program that will place students as partners in student life rather than spectators. Cheshire refers to this active participation in the learning program as partnership learning. Cheshire believes that Tampa is becoming one ol the most dynamic areas in the country and that UT should be part ol this trend He is positive that UT can become the top choice of higher learning and serve as a talent bank lor Tampa and other areas.
