Just as the seasons bring their changes, contributing to the uniqueness of the time, so did the 1977-1978 school year bring distinct changes to the University of Tampa. The most significant changes occurred within the Administration. In the same year that the country’s new president emerged on the scene amidst boiled peanuts and Billy Beer so did Richard D. Cheshire, the University's new president, arrive amidst wide ranging policy change and structural reorganization. With the resignation of Marisol Johns, Vice President of Student Affairs, faculty, staff and students lost a dedicated administrator and friend. Dr. Michael Mendelsohn assumed the responsibilities of Provost while. Dr. David Ford was named Dean of Faculty and Dr. Mark Lono was hired as Secretary of the University. The 1977-78 school year saw drastic changes in Housing too. Delo Residence Hall became co-ed by floors. The Universal Host Motel was purchased by the university and converted into Rivershore Tower Residence Hall. Changes in dorm policies allowed alcohol in rooms and the make-up of regulations to be decided by each dorm. The thirteen silver minarets crowning Plant Hall, formerly the Tampa Bay Hotel, earned the University the crowning distinction of being named a National Historic Monument by the National Parks’ Registry. Two new majors. Political Science and Urban Affairs, were added to the curriculum, enhancing the already strong academic environment. Additional fiction and non-fiction writing courses were added to the English curriculum, hopefully plowing the way for an anticipated writing major. An increased interest in the Fine Arts blossomed in the addition of new drama and dance classes, and the completion of the Lee Scarfone Art Gallery — a first for the Tampa Bay Area. And as in any school year there were the tears, the laughter, the good times and the bad. Freshmen experienced the anxieties associated with a new way of life, while upperclassmen solidified relationships made previously amidst the ivy-covered walls. Policies, administration and much of the student body changed, but the historic corridors of Plant Hall remained as a reminder that the past will always be with us . .a. ' i u 1C i 3
