ing the college to thousands of listeners, preaching as he had preached in the pulpit a mem- orial endowment, if you will, for the university’s war dead.” Stu- dents went out in droves, knocked at the doors of homes, entered canneries and factories, until in cash and pledges the university had gained $411.000 of its needed half-million endowment. After the death of Dr. Nance, Dr. David M. Delo became presi- dent in 1957, continuing in the Nance tradition. He too made many contacts with community and personal friends for sup- port. His wife “Sunny” organ- ized the “Chiselers Club,” made up of community-spirited wives who have devoted time and energy to university fund- raising and renovation projects including complete restoration of the old hotel ballroom and the Fletcher Lounge, the dining room which had served as library. During Dr. Delo’s tenure, the university’s football team was selected by wire services as number one in the nation’s small colleges. Other campus facilities include a music building, fine arts building, theatre, university union, four residence halls and a library. The modern library structure contains 160,000 vol- umes, microfilms, ultra-micro- fiche, special collections, rare books and first editions. The library serves as a depository for U.S. government publications. Besides the usual undergrad- uate liberal arts studies, the uni- 29
