Our purpose is to help the individual girl develop her potential ability to full capacity. The new year brought many new goals and achievements for Delta Phi Epsilon. One of our most noteworthy accomplish- ments of the past spring semester was the honor of achieving the highest scholastic average among the sororities on campus. September brought a whole new concept to our chapter. In keeping with the new trends of today, our National Executive Council underwent a complete revision of our rituals and purposes. October brought our annual Delta Phi Epsilon — Zcta Tau Alpha party. As in the past, this year’s parly was a great suc- cess. November brought Homecoming with accolades going to our Queen candidate, Helen Bailey, who represented Delta Sigma Pi. The sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon unanimously voted not to be in the Homecoming display competition, but rather to do- nate the money that would be spent on our display to the Cys- tic Fibrosis Fund. Our display was in the shape of a check in the amount of $200.00. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, each girl in the sorority donated money to help purchase presents for the children in the program Headstart. The brothers participated in the Public Service Weekend which was in March. The annual Red Carnation Ball which was held at a resort on the Gulf of Mexico was a suc- cess. The TKE’s were very active on campus. They were able t provide housing for students to help out the problem of ovci crowding in the dormitories. Financial activities on campu such as raffles and sales were also very successful. The Spartans teamed together to break five team single- season records during the season: Total OfTcnsc; Net Yards Gained Rushing; Number of Attempts Rushing; Number of Plays Rushing and Passing; and Points Scored. Leon McQuay re-set three of his own single-season records and broke another on his way to First Team Little All-American: Most Points Scored - 120; Rushing Attempts — 196; Yards Gained Rushing — 1362 (6.9 yards per carry); and Best Kick Off Return Average — 28.3 yards per return. Jesse Soper teamed with Leon to re-set three individual ca- reer marks. Soper: Most Extra Points - 92 (1968-69-70) and Most Field Goals — 12 (1968-69-70). McQuay: Most Runs From Scrimmage - 514 (1968-69-70). The new Coach for 1971, as Coach Curci returns to his alma mater, the University of Miami, is Coach Bill Fulcher from the University of Florida. With the majority of his players returning and a good recruiting season. Coach Fulcher is sure to succeed his first year as the Spartans head mentor. 1971 - THE YEAR OF THE SPARTANS. Tampa was forced to enter their tenth game of the year without the services of five key players because of SEC eligibility rules under which the game was to be played. The Spartans played valiantly throughout the night, but were unable to compensate for the handicap imposed upon them. McQuay ran for two touchdowns and Orndorf averaged five yards per carry in addition to a T.D. pass from Buddy Carter. The other touchdown came on a pass from Carter to Mark Wakefield who had five recentions for 112 vards for the night. Defensively. Bob Brown. Mike Hernandez, and substitute secondary backs Tom Winner and Buddy Rayburn as well as the other members of the defensive unit received many accolades for their performance. Ron Mi- kolajczyk, an offensive star prior to the Vandy game, was called upon to play both offense and defense and did so in a superb manner. All those participating in the game performed admirably in the only loss of The season for the Number One Spartans. The only thing that Vandy has to look for in 1971 is the promise of those who were ineligible for the 1970 same as well as the return- ing members of the Spartan squad — “WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR.' Spartans Triumph Over Ragin’ Cajuns Of SW LA. For 8th Win - 50-38 A simple, television pre-game show, star- ring the Cajuns’ head coach, helped turn an already irate Spartan team into an offensive machine that helped Leon McQuay star in the finest game of his college career. McQuay. scoring five touchdowns for the Spartans and rolling up over 300 yards of offensive yardage, was helped in the scoring category by two scoring strikes from quarterback Buddy Carter to tight end Alex Edlin and a field goal and three extra points off the toe of Jesse Soper. The Spartan defense caused the Cajun backs to cough up six fumbles and two interceptions were picked off by the Alert Tampa sec- ondary. The last game in the antiquated stadium was one the Spartans and Coach Faulkinberry would long remember. fe 170 Spartans Smother Idaho, 68-7 The offense rolled up 10 T.D.’s while the defense limited Idaho to 126 yards in a lop-sided 68-7 victory for the Spartans. McQuay ran for 3 T.D.’s as he averaged over 14 yards per carry in 16 tries. Other T.D.’s were made on runs of 28. 3. and 7 yards by Ken Moorehcad and on a 22 yard scamper by Bruce Brown. Touch- down passes came on strike of 10 and 7 yards from Dunbar to McCarty and Green respectively. Buddy Carter ac- counted for the other T.D. with a 9 yard pass to Mark Wakefield. Defensive stars included Gellcrslcdl. Brown, and Smith while Mooring and Mick” were instru- mental in paving the way to the goal for the backs. In the last game of the season, a revenge match. Tampa’s offense anti defense gave the fans food for thought for next year. Everyone performed outstand- ingly and Coach Curd unloaded the bench early in the fourth quarter. McQuay scored on runs of 14. 13. and 12 yards and Paul Orndorf bullied his way for 2 T.D.’s on a pass from Carter of 14 yards and a 2 yard run. Back-up quarterback Hal Dunbar teamed witn Frank Mitchell on a 1 yard pass and Ken Moore head ran for the last score, a distance of 4 yards. The defense allowed only one touchdown as Gcllcrstcdt harassed the A M quar- terback causing several turnovers. It was a fitting climax to a perfect season (almost).
