To Brothers Sofer and Newman the only re- maining founding fathers, we the Brotherhood offer our sincere thanks and appreciation for their hard labor. From this small group has emerged a strong united Brother- hood of 30 men, striving for only one thing; true brotherhood. Scholastically, socially, and athletically this past year has been the best in our short history. The dean’s list and honor roll were frequented by several of our brothers, with Brother Goldstein leading the way with an overall 3.6 average. Brother Fincman, besides serving as President of the chapter, also served as the treasurer of the Inter-Fraternity Council. Brother Sofer was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and also served as the Vice President of the Student Body. Brother Burke chaired the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives. Brother Ruslandcr was the chapter delegate to the I.F.C. With this graduation the chapter will lose Brothers Bouchard, Newman. Ruslandcr and Sofer. To these men and our brothers we pledge to keep up our high standards and hard work. Frank Ciotti 1969-1970 proved to be another rewarding year for the Sig Eps”. Maintaining the traditions of years past, the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon con- tinued to play a dominant role in both the academic and social life of the university. The fall pledge class has helped to replace the vacancies left by the December graduation of seven outstanding brothers. The new brothers have been instilled with a true feeling of brotherhood and will be a dynamic force in future campus life. The Sig Eps” continued to perform in their characteristic fashion in intra-mural sports. A strong showing in all of the various sports activities has put the “Sig Eps” well on the road to another intra mural championship. The social calendar with such highlights as home- coming at the Sokol, the Christmas party, “Greek” weekend, “Sig Ep” weekend and the annual “Sam- my Party” topped of! another successful year of social activities for the Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers. Zeta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon 75 of Tau Epsilon Phi TEPS arc tops. The past year has made this more of a reality than a fantasy. F.psilon Sigma chapter, with a nucleus of moving, ambitious brother, has brought itself out of obscurity. ! i The fall semester was a big one for Tau Epsilon Phi. It opened many eyes and many minds. Who would have ever believed that the fraternity house could actually be a nice place to visit, or for that matter, to live in. But it's true! After months of hard labor the Verne Street ghetto has now reached its zenith in beauty. (This is in reference to the interior, not the exterior of the house, that will come in due time.) 76 Tau Epsilon Phi 1. Dan Weinstein 2. Mike Tepper 3. Bob Hamner 4. Greg Howell 5. Jack O’Grady 6. Under the direction of Steve Wcichselbaum, Athletic Chairman, Epsilon Sigma is currently in fourth place, only a few points out of third. Individuals such as Larry Lesser and Wcichselbaum. who took first and second place respectively in handball, helped our cause greatly. Also “Evil Griffith, second place in pool; Mike Teper fifth in fencing; not to men- tion TEPS first place in baitcasting and fourth in volleyball. Wcichselbaum maintained his status as our best athlete, being named to the all-star volleyball and football teams. With sports such as bowing, basketball, and softball coming up, brothers Griffith, Tommassi, Mercer, Teper, Rosenthal, and Wcichselbaum will constitute the nucleus in athletics during the remainder of the semester. As in the past, sports are still one of the high points of TEP. Our leader, Ed Rachins, has shown himself to be capable and motivated, two characteristics which have helped make TEP the dynamite fraternity that it now is. 77 ! I I I I i I I ! Pi Kapp originally started out as a colony from the chapter of Sigma Kappa Nu. As more members became brothers of the fraternity, it developed a strong union of devoted men. Many of our active alumni arc involved with business, banking, and law. Two alumni. Mr. Bobier and Mr. Bradley arc President and Vice President of Tampa’s Active Alumni Association. Pi Kappa Phi, with this strong backing of well-known men of Tampa, has thrived to make our fraternity a place of closer brotherhood. The function of Pi Kappa Phi is: trying to strive for better relation for our University and community. The frater- nity docs all it can to help people overcome their obstacles. The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi arc endeavoring to improve the community-university relations through public service. This year, as in the past, we arc trying to improve on our high heritage. This year we have had the Ship-wreck party. Pajama Party, Roaring Twenties Party, Red-neck Party, Roman Toga Party, and our Rose Ball Weekend. Also, the fra- ternity has helped Cancer Research by sponsoring the “Send a Mouse to College” fund raising drive, and our brothers and pledges helped put books in tho library. Della Sig is a professional business fraternity, which consists of a select group of men majoring in Business, Economics, and Accounting. It endeavors to give these men a basic understanding of the business world. Delta Sig has had many professional as well as social functions this past year. Almost every week a promi- nent business man from the Tampa area has spoken before the brother and has enhanced our knowledge. OFFICERS: President — Robert Hearden Senior Vice President — James Spencer Vice President — Robert Fedor Chancellor — Larry Evans Treasurer— Dave Cabincss Secretary — Carl Graham The goals of Delta Sigma Pi arc to better crystalizc the futures of its brothers while they arc in college, to give each brother the opportunity to apply his business education in a practical sense, and to make important acquaintances with influential business leaders. One goal that was achieved by the brothers of the fraternity that we arc extremely proud of is that the average of those in the Business Fraternity is six-tenths (.6) of a point higher than the remaining people in the Business Department. We arc looking forward to another very successful year and we would like to congratulate those among us who arc graduating. 82 Epsilon Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi 83 Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Theta Chi 84 13. Our brothers have always been active in student govern- ment with officers such as president of student government, senior class president, junior class president and vice president student judge, parliamentarian, ways and means and many others. Theta Chi has had many social activities, including cocktail parties before and after every football game, a comc-as-you-arcn’t party, a hay ride, beach party, purple passion party, a shot a minute contest, car rally, beer brails, football and basketball games between pledges and brothers, baseball with orphans, Dr. Delo’s Christmas party, whis- key sour hour—Friday afternoons. Epsilon Beta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon 86 The Epsilon Beta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity was installed at the University of Tampa on May 27, 1955, from a local colony named Kappa Sigma Kappa. In 1966 the TKE House was purchased at 200 Hyde Park Place. During the past 15 years TKE has progressed to become the largest fraternity on the University of Tampa’s campus in 1969. Each year TKE has received recognition for community service projects. This year’s project will be held in March. The fraters have also reactivated the Order of Diana. Parties have been the main theme for the fraters this year. The Toga Party was an arousing success! Who can forget the Hal- loween Party? There were also cocktail parties which were held before and after each football game. A fraternity’s weekend is the biggest social event of the year. TKE’s Red Carnation Ball will be held at a resort of the Gulf of Mexico in April. May 27 will mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of the EB chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon and will be celebrated on this weekend. The chccrlcading squad was again lead by Alpha Chi's Kathy Driscoll. Captain; Mary Pratt.. Mary Jane Romeo, and Linda Curry who cheered our Spartans on to victory. Also the majorette squad was lead by Alpha Chi, Eileen Fernandez. Alpha Chi Omega also had an outstanding Homecoming this year! Miss Kathy Driscoll was our Lady-in-Waiting, Lynne Benson was Third Maid, and Patsy Shcalby was our beautiful candidate. Alpha Chi placed 2nd for our beautiful Moon Lawn Display and we were the only sorority to place in the Spartan Spoofs, winning 3rd place. Our heartfelt thanks goes to all our Big Lyres and our sweetheart. Bill James, for their help throughout the year. Overall, this was a successful Homecoming for the Alpha Chi Omegas. Everyone had a terrific time at the fabulous Winter Party this year. The presentation of the fall pledge clan was made at that time. The pledges presented were Linda Curry, Kathy Ernest, Eileen Fernandez, Lourdes Martin, and Elizabether Mueller. Throughout the year, our monthly Carnation Breakfasts and Dinners were a lot of fun and once again our Spring Leadout was a fantastic success. i 93 Interfraternity Council L to R, STANDING: Jack O’Grady, Mick Fincman, Tim Rose, Ray Rotella, Doug Howell, John Russlandcr, Jeff O’Norc, Fred Pollock, Chuck Maine. Coach Curci anticipated a good season and received his wish. No less than four team single season records broke. The total offensive mark of 3,221 yards was shattered by more than 800 yards to 4.070 yards. Yardage gained passing rose to 2,391 yards from 2,043 yards. The brilliant defensive unit intercepted 24 passes and returned them 341 yards. Combined efforts of Jim Del Gaizo and Leon McQuay broke three individual single season marks. McQuay gained 971 yards rushing. Del Gaizo fractured his own records by passing for 2,261 yards and 19 touchdowns. Seven individual career records were also set. Leon McQuay has now run 318 plays from scrimmage. Del Gaizo has 3,925 yards rushing and 4,269 yards passing. 638 passes attempted, and 322 passes completed in his career. Joe Sliker received 107 passes as a Tampa split end. Jesse Soper demolished the most extra points record of 22. Soper booted for 58 PATs during his two years. With the graduation loss of several players Coach Curci will have to rely on his talented bench and recruiting pro- gram. Good coaching and team desire spell success. Tampa has it all. Almost 40% of the games this past year were decided by 10 points or less. Pressure had little effect on the deter- mined Tampas as they won 70% of these close games. But when the Spartans lost, they were humbled by almost 20 points each game. Only two games were won by Tampa by over twenty points. All-American John Napier averaged close to 24 points per game; he led the Spartans in that category. Chip Nelson, Pat Biber, and Napier accounted for over 70% of Tampa’s 80 points per game average. Pat Biber overshadowed all players by grabbing over 17 rebounds per game. Coach Dana Kirk blended their talents into a mold of victory. His experience and the team’s spirit of desire produced another successful Spartan campaign. Delo II i i I i i i TO THE CLASS OF 1970 During your years at the University you have seen the acquisition of the North Campus, the activation of Delo Hall, the opening of the new Art building and construction of the Mcrl Kclcc Library. New recrea- tional and athletic facilities have been created while major changes have occurred in academic facilities and curricular programs. Upon graduation you become members of a national body of alumni with centers in many communities. While you arc creating a new life as graduates, those of us responsible for the University continue to plan for the years to come—for the building of a greater University. It is your privilege to play a constructive role in this future. I am confident you will play it well. Never in the history of independent higher educa- tion has its situation been so critical. But, if those who have benefited from attendance at institutions such as your alma mater rally to their support, they will re- new their strength and enhance their academic quality. As graduates of the University of Tampa, this is your challenge in the years ahead. I count on you to meet it. ! I 136 Board of Trustees FRONT ROW, seated, left to right: Mr. Carl D. Brorein. Wildlife 236 237 .kl I' In Memorium Ruby Lattimore fed the stray cats around the University every morning before she took her usual post by the Plant Hall elevator. For over 20 years, Ruby was a friend to students and the University, greeting everyone with a smile and a kind word. Her hair had grayed over the years, yet she showed no other sign of age. Wednesday, January 27, Ruby worked late to accommo- date night students. She returned home that evening and died in her sleep. The next morning, the cats were waiting by the elevator. —The Minaret 249 Real life calls for real taste. m For the taste of your life—it’s Coca-Cola Here and now. ro TBAOf MASK ® National Auto Super Market Over 300 Car Selection . . .
