Assistant Professor of Mathematics MACDILL DIVISION UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA Opening the door to a better future through the MacDill Division which is offered to airmen. Since the MacDill division of the University of Tampa was established in July 1960, the school has grown by leaps and bounds. Current enrollment stands at a record 559 students in the current semester. As might be expected, all classes at the MacDill based Uni- versity begin after 6 p.m. — normal ofT duty hours for the Air Force and Army part-time scholars. Classes arc held in some 16 classrooms located in various parts of the base. Although technically a division of the University of Tampa, Ray W. Clifton, MacDill division di- rector, and retired Air Force colonel, pointed out the school virtually operates as a separate institution. Colonel Clifton offers guidance to MacDill student. JET AGE ACADEMICS At this university there are no stately elms, no ivy covered buildings, and in fact an instructor might have to pause in his lecture to await the passing whine of a low flying jet, but this doesn’t slow down the school’s determined student body. Last spring the division had 26 graduates. It is possible to receive de- grees in business administration, social studies and industrial arts with- out leaving the MacDill campus. In keeping with the goal of a college degree for all officers and 60 hours of college credit for its non-com- missioned men, the Air Force pays for courses taken by sendee person- nel. Classes are primarily held for active personnel, but dependents, retired military and civil service workers are permitted to enroll. The Mac- Dill division is recognized by Air Force officials as one of the top schools in the country and is one of the few able to offer degrees with- out study on the main campus. 34 Basic Algebra as offered in one of the sixteen classes of the MacDill Division. 35 Classes go better with Coke. We intend to take the overall intramural Championship once again this year. Playing football for the Spartans arc brothers Bill Boyd and Ed Owens. Hartmann Warden — Steven Bronstcin November 7, marked the first anniversary of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity on the University of Tampa campus. Last year when talk of a new fraternity on campus was to be organized, they said it couldn't be done; that this new brotherhood would never survive, but the men of TEP have proved differently. This year such talk has been diminished to a mere whisper. Last year’s spirited pledge class has laid the foundation for many more to come. Fall rush has placed TEP second on campus with 10 proud pledges, and Spring Rush has placed TEP first on campus. With the conclusion of Homecoming events, TEP has placed second in the float competition and third with our unique lawn display, due to the work of our chief engi- neer, George “Golden Hands” Rose. Our well remem- bered comedy skit did not receive university recognition, but did get an offer from Paramount pictures, unfor- tunately we were forced to turn it down due to other commitments. On the sports scent TEP finished an exciting season with a victory over TKE. Honorable mention goes to Y. A. Epstein, “safety Sam” Schwartz, and Dan “the Man” Nasshorn. Basketball is in the air and TEP has a strong starting five in, Kenny “Hot Rod” Hartman, “Marvelous” Marv Goddon, “W. C.” Kalsmith, Alan “Fourth Floor” Weidberg, and “Little Stevie” Worncr. On the social scent TEP’s party at Colonial Beach was a huge success, featuring Chico and the Immigrants. In the future we have scheduled our first annual Venus Ball — “fun for all,” — progress is our most important prod- uct. It can be easily said TEP’S are tops at Tampa L’. Frater Bob Chcrct, varsity crew member, was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Elsewhere, in TKE, many fraters received honors, appointments and praise. Ron Haws was appointed student director of the Falk Theater. John Harnettc was awarded a scholarship by the History Department and Bob Miller also received a scholarship. In the literary world, Eric Nelson, had one of his works published in a national magazine. Frater Don Esposito, who is leaving us, is a man of many versatilities. Among those arc his appointmentship of Peace Corp Representative, United Nation’s associate, Hillsborough County Mental Health appoin- tee, and the News-Director of WTUN. Three of our fraters — Bob Bernstein, Dave Walrath, and Jeff Walbcrt — entered into another bond — the bond of Matrimony. In the social sphere, TKE rose to new heights. The social season was kicked off by our annual “Autumn Leaves” party and this was followed by our Christmas Dance, our “lee Follies,” our “Mid-Semestejr Swing” and then the season was topped off with our traditional ball. The brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon, as always, are working and looking forward to even a better chapter next year. 99 Ken Bo7ak Jim Caruth Norman Cohen Andy DeMeyer Rich Franckc Jim Galmin THETA CHI Dick Faunce Alex Kinnaird Lou Litu 100 Bob Maher Jerry McMurtrie Ed Meyerson President Harry M.ilhall Pete Peck Jim Smalley Richard Slyc Jerry Quinn Paul Sachetti Thaddeus Thame Gary Webb Dave Zeidenberg The qualities of leadership and high ideals that are traditional in Theta Chi were prevalent again this year. Excellent organization under Presi- dent Maher academically alert and socially prominent. Theta Chi devotion to the University manifested itself in having Theta Chi’s interspersed throughout the campus in various positions of leader- ship. Fortunate was this year’s student body in having Mr. Edward Meyerson as its President. Among the other offices and organizations served by Theta Chi’s were: The Minaret — Alex M. Kinnaird (Business Manager), Student Body See. of State — Andrew Demeycr, Student Body Financial Advisor — James Smalley, Secretary of Council of Intramural Representatives Paul Sachetti and Vice President of Civitan Collegiate — Norman Cohen (Norman Cohen and Alex Kinnaird arc credited with the founding of the organization.) It should also be noted at this time that Andrew DeMeyer was chosen Alpha Chi Omega Sweetheart AND Big Lyre. Allen Windt received the Tri-Sigma Sweetheart award. Jim Galmin brought honor not only to the school and himself, but also to the fraternity when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League. The first Student Directory for the University of Tampa was published this year by Theta Chi with Jerry McMurtrie as the editor. This was the year that found the fraternity finally settled in a permanent abode. A charming red brick building completely equipped with air conditioning and the first color television on campus. The beautiful Miss Pam Seifert was the Theta Chis’ candidate for Homecoming Queen and was chosen as such. The Morrocan Queen candidate was Miss Alice Carter, a very lovely Lady-In-Waiting. The strong spirit of unity that prevails among the brothers helped make this another great year for Theta Chi and we arc sure this same spirit will carry on next year. Thus with your entrance, the University be- gan to assume a new character, and a geographi- cally cosmopolitan atmosphere. Many of you will now return to your home com- munities. The University is a better place for your presence here; we hope that you have gained much from the University. As you undertake new endeavors, I hope that you will maintain close ties with us. We are interested in your future, just as we hope you will be inter- ested in ours. For an institution, in the long reach, is measured by the caliber and the success of its graduates. May your new careers be rich and satisfying. You complete your college work at a time when opportunity has never been greater; when the call for constructive service to society has never been more challenging; when personal responsibility and sound character have never been more greatly needed. May you measure up to these needs, and may you always look back upon your years at the University with satisfaction. David M. Dclo, President 112 Diana G. Adccb Tampa, Fla. Great “Second-Half” Team We were always able to put together two good quarters, even against the best teams. Against Western Kentucky State (14-14) and Mexico Polytcchcnic College (33-14) we managed to play four good quarters, offensively and de- fensively. Against Southwesteren Lou- isiana (17-19) we managed to play great second half ball, while playing The University of Mississippi we shock- ed those watching and listening, ending the half (0-13.) Our Spartans always seemed to come to life at the start of the second half. Billy Howell hurdle through gaping hole. Mike Bum isn’t going Hollywood, just Louisiana, with clinch by pursuing lineman. Lettermen’s Club, Major’s Club, 219 ADVERTISEMENTS 222 Towering above all other media as a common carrier of public information is the press — the tremendous, influential, dy- namic force of the almost 2,000 daily and 10,000 weekly newspapers published in United States today. By skilled and conscientious use of news- papers, we can arm ourselves with knowl- edge of the world in which we live. Article 1 of the Bill of Rights states that Congress shall make no law . . . abridg- ing freedom of speech or of the press. This is the written guarantee of freedom of the printed word in the United States. Free- dom of the press, a privilege of democracy, also expects a responsibility. We, the citi- zens who enjoy it, must think for ourselves about the important questions of our time.
