PRESIDENT’S FAREWELL MESSAGE TO THE SENIOR CLASS A university is measured by the records of its graduates end their contribution to the society which makes possible the continucnce of the University and their own existence. Each of you has established certain life goals. As the years multiply and experience clarifies and sharpens your perceptions os to what constitutes a sotisfcctory life, these goals may change and broaden. I hope you will never forget, however, that the con- tinuation of our democratic society will depend on the way in which each of you func- tions as a participating and constructive citizen within that society during the balance of your lifetime. You have already laid o foundation for this future through four years of constructive work at the University of Tampa. Hcc you not done so, you would not be graduated. Eut this is only the beginning. Before you stretches a long period of pcrscnol growth. I hope your experience here has given ycu the sound foundation required for a meaning- ful future. In addition to the need for growth to meet your own personal goals, each of you has a debt to repay. In the large, this is a debt to the society which made it possible for in- stitutions like your Alma Mater to exist, so that you would have the opportunity to attend college and secure the coveted baccalaureate degree with all that this implies for your personal future. You olso owe a personal debt to your parents or to others who hove cssisted you to secure this educofion, including the University if you hove received schol- arships or assistance in any form. Society is perpetuoted and strengthened only if those of us living in the present make full peyment of our debt to the past by applying these payments to the future. Thus I hope that each of you, in your own way and according to your persona! resources ond opportunities, will repay your personal debt, not because it is a requirement but be- cause it is a privilege. I hope you will do so by continuing to develop your own poten- tialities to the maximum; by participating in worthwhile activities which will strengthen your community and society; and by maintaining an interest in and support of your Alma Mater. Disraeli once said that the future strength of a notion depends on the caliber of the education which it affords its young people. Each of you can assist in this noble pur- pose by helping to strengthen your University. For as you graduate, your Alma Mater faces her most challenging end expectant years. With each of you goes my personal wishes for success. David M. Delo, President 15

IN MEMORIAM George B. Howell The entire student body, faculty, and administration was greatly saddened by the death of Mr. George B. Howell on October 17, 1961. Mr. Howell was one of the stronges friends and supporters of the university. He was long a driving force in its athletic program; he organized the university's athletic association as a young banker in Tampa and became its chairman. A member of the Board of Trustees from the time of the uni- versity's founding in 1931 until his death, he was chairman of the board's athletic com- mittee. The university's gymnasium, which he sponsored, and the former Crescent Hall Women's Dormitory bear his name. Mr. Howell was chairman of the board of the Ma- rine Bank and Trust Co., director of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce, the Florida State Fair Association, and the United Fund of Greater Tampa; and was a member of the Florida Council of 100 and the Committee of 100 in Tampa. 17
