Farewell Message The Senior Class University of Tampa Tampa, Florida To each graduating Senior my hearty congratulations. When you leave this University some of it will go with you. As a result, you will never be the same again. But you have also left something of your- self behind. Because the Class of 1959 was here, the University itself has changed. Your work in student affairs and projects of all kinds; your con- tributions to student government; the impact of your thinking and your personalities on the pattern of University life can never be erased. And this is good, for any University is a composite of its history. Each of you owes a debt and a large one. You owe a debt to all the people in history who expressed a sufficiently original idea to stimulate your think- ing. You owe a debt to your professors, particularly for their self-control when you uttered classroom inanities on the days you had not read your assignment. You owe a debt to your classmates for all you have learned from them in the area of human relations. You owe a debt to the men and women of the staff and faculty who have conscientiously tried to help you with your personal problems. Finally, you owe a debt to the University. For although you paid a tuition fee each year, the sum total is probably equal only to three-fourths of the cost of your four years here — thus your Senior year probably has been free. These debts are not peculiar to you as Tampa Seniors; they arc owed by every college graduate. They constitute no burden. The loan to you was made by the past and there is no promissory note to assure collection. Thus, your debt is to the past as well as to the present. But as thinking men and women and loyal alumni, you will pay that debt to the future. You will pay it through your personal success in your chosen profession; through your services to your fellows; through your participation in and support of your church; through greater consideration for the interests of your neighbor. You will pay it all your life long and be happy in so doing. More particularly, you will pay your debt to the University of Tampa not because it is a debt but because repayment will be a labor of love. You know that if you do your part to restore the reservoir which makes such debts possible, those who come after you will have a safe and secure fund upon which to draw. Their lives will be better for it. And through this repayment you will help your Alma Mater to achieve that destiny which is so obviously hers. 9 David M. Delo, President
