Secretary-Treasurer Anna Lee Fatzinger . . . Representative We, the 1958-59 Freshman Class of the University of Tampa, con well say that our first venture into college life has been an eventful and prosperous one. Rat Week. the annual Pajama Parade through town, and Rat Court fully initiated us into our first and most trying year of college life. Enthusiasm has been shown by the Freshman Class in all school affairs. Elections in October had many vying for offices in the Student Senate. Those chosen to lead the Freshmen were: President. Joe Can- non; Vice-President. Ralph Lazzara; Secretary-Treasurer, Jan Pesola: and Representative, Anna Lee Fatzinger. As the year draws to a close for us as Freshmen, we can look back and say that at times it was one of trials and tribulations, but now that we have taken the initial step toward a richer and fuller college experience we can look forward to our ac- complishments as Sophomores. 130 Caro! BOB GAMBREll Hallboek TAMPA - 14 JAX STATE - 13 COLLEGE BOWL. Jacksonville, Alabama.—Mike Skarou- lis. The Golden Greek from Tarpon Springs. Florida, faked off the entire opposition, and ran 30 yards for a touchdown in the waning minutes of the game to enable the Spartans to eke out a 14 to 13 win over Jacksonville State. Tampa was on the short end of a 13-7 score when Ska- roulis pulled his trick play. Fred Cason, who had scored Tampa's other touchdown and extra point, calmly booted the extra point which awarded the Spartans the victory. Jacksonville State entered the half-time intermission with a comfortable 13-0 lead but the Spartans, fresh from Coach Huerta's fired-up half-time pep talk, shook loose for two scores, including the clincher by Skaroulis, to emerge vic- toriously. 166 CHARLIE COLEMAN Center TAMPA - 26 APPALACHIAN - 9 Heod corrie two men for 5 yord goin. I ITho Spartans cclobratcd Homecoming victoriously as a result of topping the Appalachian Mountaineers. 26 to 9 for their fifth win of the grid season. The passing of Skaroulis and Turner and the bull-like running of Cason was too much for Appalachian eleven. Captain Bill Post, Centers Wayne Story and Charlie Coleman, and Ends John Smoot and Ken 8el!eveau played outstanding football in Tampa's line. A NG - 1957 TAMPA - 27 DELTA STATE - 26 In another closely played contest, the Spartans edged Delta State, 27-26 for their sixth victory of the 1957 season. U. - 21 With Don Herndon slowed due to an ankle injury, the Spartans lost the season's finale to Florida State University. 21 to 7 before more than 11,000 fans. Among their many appear- ances this year have been special appearances at both Plant and Jefferson High Schools which were highly successful. The chorus also gave a concert in co-operation with the city of Tampa called the Christmas Festival of Music which was held at the Municipal Auditorium. Christmas time also found the chorus at the grand opening of the new Sears 191 I I Store. It was the first time such a spectacular had taken place end we were assured that it would not be the last. Of a religious aspect is the fact that the Concert Chorus appeared at both the Hyde Park and the First Presbyterian churches. They have also sung very beautifully at several of the University's assemblies. The finale for the chorus was the singing at the com- mencement exercises for our '58 graduates. Outstanding soloists of the Concert Chorus are: Jack Jenkins, David Manley, Sally Wallace and Hayes Wilson. Ftoturing Oov MorUy and h Conaarf Chorus. 195 I.
