YEARBOOK i i 9 4 4 7 Dr. Ellwood C. Nance, President of the University, whose undying devotion and continuing self-sacrifice made possible the dream of accreditation. ■s-i-fi ,9uf Dr. Nance returns from California bringing with him Mr. Daniel V. McEachern of Seattle, Washington, a long-time friend of the University, to whom Dr. Nance presented the University Achievement Medal. D 53fl ms f c-a Farewell Message From President Nance To you young ladies and gentlemen who received your degrees in the January ciass, and to the graduates who will receive their degrees at the June and August Commencement ceremonies of 1953, go my heartiest congratulations and my prayers for your personal happiness and professional success. The Trustees, faculty, staff and administration will follow your careers with sincere interest. All of us are grateful and pleased that you have had your college training here and we hope your experiences at this institution have been such that you will always be grateful for, and proud of, your degree from the University of Tampa. A college education not only increases our capacity for the under- standing and enjoyment of life but it also carries with it obligations and responsibilities in leadership in promoting, building and safeguarding the welfare, prosperity and progress of our country and its educational, spiritual and industrial institutions. Whenever and wherever you un- selfishly serve others you will be enhancing the fame and honoring the name of your Alma Mater. Our interest in your welfare does not end with your graduation. Whenever we can help you in any manner please feel free to command us. Sustain your interest in your Alma Mater and keep your lines of communication with it in good repair. Come back often to renew your inspiration—and to see your old friends. God bless you, Dr. Ellwood C. Nance = 3fn Jflemoriam C. Herbert Laub, A.B., M.A., Ph.D. The first semester of this year we had a shock. We arc still not over it. Actually, we will never get over it.” No one knows the number of students over whom he wielded his kindly influence. It is impossible to estimate the number of lives his life touched—and thereby enriched. If he could, we know that he would say: The living are the important; the dead arc remembered by their deeds.” This chapter in the history of the University is closed with this page, but it can never be forgotten. If around exam time you are standing by the well, you can probably hear Dear Mablc” being read. No matter where he is, he will never be further away than our memories. WE DEDICATE This year, the Moroccan is dedicated to Miller K. Adams, acting professor of physi- cal education. It is dedicated to him not so much because of big things, but because of the many, many little things—little things made big by him—that he has done for students and for the University. His interesting lectures; that helping pat on the back when you were feeling low; the friendly laugh and some little joke that made the rest of the day worth living; the times on the road to a basketball game when the budget was spent and his checkbook came to the rescue; because of all these little things” that you have done, we want to say, Thanks, Coach, for being a swell guy.” THE SENIOR CLASS. This book is yours. It has been photographed, written, printed, covered and delivered to you for your enjoyment. We regret that we cannot read it for you, but that is something you will have to do for yourself. The members of the staff have worked long and hard to give you the best book that was in their power to produce. If you find any mistakes, please blame them on the fact that after all, we, too, are hu man. To the graduating seniors, let me say that you have graduated from one of the best, and certainly the finest, college in America. What you have deposited here in four short years of time and effort will be returned to yon all your life in dividends of knowledge, skill and wisdom. Now that it is all over, yon probably feel that you have given enough—but what actually have you left for the school to remember you by? Your name scratched on a desk in the physics lab? The best way for you to increase the heritage you leave the University is to join the Alumni Association. If you do this, the happiest years of your life, your college days, will never end for you at graduation, but will continue for a lifetime. Another way to perpetuate yourself at the University is to contribute each year to the University Endowment Fund. If you do either one or both of these things, you can step back and watch the school grow. Someday, when the University has miles of sprawling campus and indoor, heated swimming pools, you can throw out your chest, pat your kids on the head and say, Yes, son, I helped build all that.” Makes you feel like a king, doesn't it? O.K. Scratch your name off that desk. Put your hand in your pocket and dig. You have left the best school on earth, but in these days of space research, let's make it the best school in the galaxy! Hope you enjoy this book. Bruce Atkins, Editor V • SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS John O’Neal - President Joan Jacoijsen - Vice-President Sue Shaffer - - - Secretary Joan Irvin - - Representative I! Help, gang, they got me!” Charlie Har- ris fumbles the ball, as Beyer Dupree, Julius Nagy, Tom Mahin, and Joe Zalupski clear the ground for what might have been. Oh, well, you can't win ’em all. Mississippi Southern walked about with us 52 to 25. Left to Right: Frank Stei anik and Joe Tkevokrow i i The victorious Spartans went to the Cigar Bowl and came out winners in a 20-to-I2 contest over Lenoir Rhyne. Here H. L. Hiers caught a pass and went down field with the able assist- ance of Pete Milian and Nick Waytovich. Florida State University should have stayed in bed or used brass nucks. All kidding aside, it was a good clean game even though the thirty - five people from Tampa that went to the game cheered louder than all of F.S.U. Here Chicko has just broken away from the last of eight men who laid hands on him during this play and is headed for a touchdown. Assisting him on the play arc: Reggie Colvard, Fred Pancoasc, Ken Bcllivcau and Tom Mahin. We won 39 to 6. Dan Scaringi being presented with the outstanding player award for the Cigar Bowl by Red” McEwcn for the Egypt Temple Shrine. , i — . i V — ' You can’t see anything—neither can we—the rain tied up every- thing and so did Tampa. Tampa 6. Stetson 6. One of those famous sideline tackles brings Coach Huerta to his feet as Ray Escobar shouts into the phone. Coach Bailey just sits there getting madder by the minute°’( 9J $. Chicko gains yardage with an able assist from Pete McLeod. TAMPA — 7 CHATTANOOGA — 30 OOPS. .rr H. L. Hiors leaves Groce of Appala- chian as he digs for pay dire. Tampa won this one 19 to 0. Al Leathers nearly gets away from a South Ga. tackle. Another chalked up for Tampa 66 to 6. Vince Chicko is nearly caught—but not quite. He scores, but the fighting Spartans go down before the McNcccc team, 42 to 20. - AA.IA ) Red Mansell rubs down Al Leather’s neck as Milt Green, Braxton Pounders, and Leathers watch the play on the field. Chuck Koch, assistant trainer, and Mansell carry Frank Stefanik off the playing field after being hit in the mouth. Sanford Byron Mansell, known to the team as Red,” helped the team to its winning season with his able managing and a good arm on the massage table. Mansell is also trainer for the basketball team. I ■! i I « I i I George Mont , the old mainstay himself. Blew hot and cold all year but still turned in one of his best seasons. It looked for a while like he would crack the two thousand mark. Johnny O’Neal, another senior, played equally good ball and soon became a fast favorite with the Tampa fans. if i BASKETBALL Marty Brooks. Marty played a good game of ball and could almost always be counted on in tight clinches. Chuck Jarc ynski. Chuck was another to blow hot and cold, but at times played in- spired ball. Chuck is a long-time favorite with the Tampa fans and for them he can never do wrong. Bill Thrift. Bill was another senior whom next year’s squad will sorely miss. He was not a great point maker but he was there when if counted most. Bobby Bryan. Another one of those Bryan boys who has come to Tampa U. While he didn’t play much this year, great things arc expected of him next season. Wendell Akins, freshman with great possi- bilities. A hard, fast player. All he needs is a little court experience. Coach Sam Bailey. Coach Bailey had a rough time this year. His ingenuity and play- making ability would have, but for lack of funds, taken us into the NAIB Regional. Coach Bailey suffered innumerable indigni- ties at the hands of the Armory officials and he should indeed search for a new court for next season. SCORES FOR THE Marty Brooks sinks one against Central Mis- souri. His great playing helped put that one in the win column. Big man Chuck Jarezynski goes after that ball and keeps Columbia from scoring. He is assisted by George Montz. MaeDILL................... ROLLINS................... MaeDILL................... S' THE TAMPA BAY HOTEL If there was any one of the many luxurious resort hostelrics which stood pre-eminent among all others, and which was incomparable from whatever view it may be considered, it was the Tampa Bay Hotel at Tampa, Florida. It was architecturally a gem into which had been blended many suggestive reflections of the Alhambra of Sunny Spain. Its surroundings of tropical park and sparkling water gave to it a supremely beautiful setting, enhanced by the brilliant reflection of its glittering Moorish minarets and crescents. Within, it was the palace of a prince, a museum of costly and pleasing paintings, statuary, cabinets and bric-a-brac from many lands. It typified all that the refined, cultured and luxurious tastes of our modern civilization term elegance. Considered from its practical side—as a hotel—it combined in an almost lavish degree every known convenience, luxury and necessity of human life. To be once a guest within its portals was to remain always under the subtle fascination of its alluring charms. rfi w K ii ; V STEINWAY, CHICKERING, MUSETTE by WINTER, WURLITZER PIANOS and the famous HAMMOND ORGAN 106 E.
