FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 1950 You arc graduating at the beginning of the second half of the most significant century of recorded history. In the political, social and economic ideologies which have originated and come into full flower in the five decades since the birth of this century, and in the inventions and discoveries of the past fifty years—arc all the promise of universal peace and human welfare, and at the same time all the potentialities of the total destruction of our civilization. The ideals and labors of the men and women of your generation will decide the social struggle which has now divided our modern world into two great ideolo- gical camps. security, happiness, peace. Our motives are the same, but we arc beginning to draw swords over the methods of attaining the goal. The little people arc confused, but the leaders know what they want and they will not accept the prize unless it is packaged according to their specifi- cations. At least ninety-five per cent of the social and political problems which now cause us grief and anxiety arc man-made. X'e have learned how to bear and control the impediments and hazards of physical nature, but we have not found the wisdom or the will to manage our minds and or morals. Our hope—the hope of the world—is in you and your generation. You are leaving the University with the sincere congratulations and good wishes of the administration, trustees, staff and faculty. Strange as it may seem, the little people, the laymen, on each side of the battle line, seek the same things: Your class is the largest of the classes that have graduated from the University since it was founded in 1931. As of February 1 of this year, a total of 14,080 students have been enrolled at the University. Of this number 553 have received degrees. You will always remember, of course, that whatever service you render to humanity and whatever may be your personal achievements will reflect glory and honor on your- selves and your Alma Mater.
