I ■ FOREWORD Knowing, as we do, the many hardships and disappointments that lie in the background of this Pageant of 1949-50, we are all the more proud of the record of individual and collective accomplish- ment wc have the privilege of presenting to you in this book. It is our wish that the spirit of those who have helped make this record possible may bring them other honors in after years, and our hope that it may communicate itself to those who will follow them on this campus. Through his personal interest and companionable friendship, he has endeavored to make our college life one of achievement and effectiveness. Dr. Howard G. Baya FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 1950 You arc graduating at the beginning of the second half of the most significant century of recorded history. In the political, social and economic ideologies which have originated and come into full flower in the five decades since the birth of this century, and in the inventions and discoveries of the past fifty years—arc all the promise of universal peace and human welfare, and at the same time all the potentialities of the total destruction of our civilization. The ideals and labors of the men and women of your generation will decide the social struggle which has now divided our modern world into two great ideolo- gical camps. security, happiness, peace. Our motives are the same, but we arc beginning to draw swords over the methods of attaining the goal. The little people arc confused, but the leaders know what they want and they will not accept the prize unless it is packaged according to their specifi- cations. At least ninety-five per cent of the social and political problems which now cause us grief and anxiety arc man-made. X'e have learned how to bear and control the impediments and hazards of physical nature, but we have not found the wisdom or the will to manage our minds and or morals. Our hope—the hope of the world—is in you and your generation. You are leaving the University with the sincere congratulations and good wishes of the administration, trustees, staff and faculty. Strange as it may seem, the little people, the laymen, on each side of the battle line, seek the same things: Your class is the largest of the classes that have graduated from the University since it was founded in 1931. As of February 1 of this year, a total of 14,080 students have been enrolled at the University. Of this number 553 have received degrees. You will always remember, of course, that whatever service you render to humanity and whatever may be your personal achievements will reflect glory and honor on your- selves and your Alma Mater. Wc were beaten by Memphis State University, Milligan College, Rollins College, Abilene Christian College, Stetson University, F.rskinc College, Delta State Teachers College, and Florida State University. Wc outgained many of these opponents and made more first downs than several. If many members of the squad return next fall, our new coach, Frank Sinkwich, will undoubtedly develop the first-class team for which wc have already demonstrated a potential. All-American Mac Williams Captain of the 1950 Spartan Basketball Team 1949-50 BASKETBALL SEASON Our basketball team, after a rather slow start with losses to six strong Northern teams, came home to roll up an impressive record in the South. We beat Tennessee, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, the University of the South, Florida State, the University of Florida, Rollins twice, Stetson, Mercer, Florida Southern twice, Miami, Erskine, and Wofford. Our Southern losses were to Western Kentucky State Teachers, Stetson, Florida State, Mercer and the University of Florida, making our Southern record an enviable fifteen wins and five losses. We then went to the NAIB tournament, where the team blazed through Mercer, Georgia Teachers, New Mexico A. M., George Peppcrdine, and Davis and Elkins College before being beaten by Indiana State College and Central College Missouri. This made our record for the season twenty wins and fourteen losses against con- sistently excellent opposition. Our prospects for next season are very bright since the entire squad will probably return next fall. Mike Gaddis Head Basketball Coach I Left to Right: Avron Bryan, Harry Bryan, Fred Baity.
