creu ct 4 By presenting to you the 1949 Moroccan, we have tried to bring an accurate representation of life at the University of Tampa. This year we would like to introduce to you Moro C. Can, the little man who isn’t there, as our theme. Moro C. Can, the University’s perennial freshman, entered this institution some time in the late 1930’s, but there is no record of his high school preparation, admission, or college credits. A peek into Business Office records might show that he is listed as delinquent in his college fees, but no one can definitely lay hands on him to collect. In the Spring elections Moro C. Can received two votes for President of the Student Body and one for Senior Representative. With a little of the right” political support he might have gone far. Rumors have circulated frequently that a strange figure has often been seen climbing the circular stairs across from the Library, or wandering down the upstairs hall by Dr. Laub’s office, or climbing over statues late at night in the lobby. No one has definitely mentioned Moro C. Can but we believe it was he. In following Moro C. Can through the 1949 Moroccan we hope you enjoy seeing him as much as we enjoy presenting him to you. Falk 1 PreAidehtA Jarewlt To SeniorJ My sincere congratulations to the mem- bers of the graduating class of 1949. You have acquired some of the intellectual dis- ciplines and attitudes which, if used per- sistently and wisely, will enable you to enlarge and improve the limited education you have obtained during your brief college career. The individual’s capacity for the enlargement of his mind and spirit is limited largely by his interests, will and ambition. The scope of education is endless. Oppor- tunities for learning are boundless. With the degree bestowed on you by the University of Tampa go the ardent good wishes of its trustees and administration. We believe you know that the larger com- munity will look to you for a type of life and leadership commensurate with the educational advantages and opportunities you have enjoyed. We sincerely pray that your professional success and your service to God and your country will bring happi- ness to you and increased praise and support to the University of Tampa. I Ell wood C. At the beginning of the Fall semester the Senate aided with registration, graded all freshman placement examinations, and conducted Fall elections. At Homecoming all members aided in planning the Homecoming festivities, including the pajama parade, the bonfire, and the big Home- coming Dance. During both the Fall and the Spring semesters the Senate worked on plans for a new judicial system and on the parking lot situation. In May four representatives were sent to the Intercollegiate Government and Press Convention at Barry College in Miami, Florida. These representa- tives included Richard Saxon, Bill Benson, Bob Hancock, and Owen Keene. Spring elections were conducted in May, and the semester was concluded with a formal dance in honor of all graduating seniors and the newly elected officers of all classes. The Debating Society this year began a regular schedule of debates with other colleges in Florida. The groups went to Stetson University to observe the annual tourna- ment there, and traveled to Florida Southern College, upon the invitation of the institution’s debate club, to sit in on the clash between Southern and Wheaton College. The first debate in which the society participated took place at the University of Miami. A team including Bill Benson, Howard Vail, Glenn Poucher, and Robbins Denham took part in the debate. One of the four rounds was won by Tampa, the affirmative team, consisting of Bill Benson and Howard Vail, winning the second round. The team was the guest of the Miami club and was taken on an extensive tour of the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus, Miami Beach and Hollywood Beach. The team was accompanied by Professor McGillivray, the debate coach. Debates this year were held with Florida State University, the Univer- sity of Florida, Stetson University and Florida Southern College. Officers of the Debating Society include Glenn Pouchcr, president; Bill Benson, vice president; Robbins Denham, secretary; Howard Vail, treasurer; Josephine Parente, corresponding secretary; and Peter Switkin, parliamentarian. Mike” Gaddis Director of Athletics and Head Coach The Spartans’ first year in football since the prewar years was not a howling success, but it was far from a failure. The young team of Coaches Mike Gaddis and Art Shouse won two games out of three played at home and left a mark of respect with the teams they lost to on the road. Tampa football fans enjoyed seeing the T-minded Spartans win from their arch grid rivals, the Stetson Hatters, for their first victory under the new regime. They also enjoyed the overwhelming 77-to-0 lac- ing handed the Colegio Militar of Mexico City at the Homecoming contest. But the third game at home, everything and nearly everybody deserted the Spartans, including the weather, when they met the Rollins College Tars at Phillips Field. The game was played in a drenching rain that made the large crowd scurry for shelter in the opening minutes. It never let up, and neither did the Tars. They won, 35 to 6. Tampa played a hard schedule with a better than average group of small college and military teams. In every game they did their best and with a turn of luck the decision might have been reversed. They lost to Milligan College, Memphis State, and Pensacola Naval Air team in a game that wasn’t decided until the final whistle. Rollins, Erskine and Florida State won, but had their hands full all the way. Art Shouse Assistant Director of Athletics and Head Line Coach tf-ootholl M. Miranda J. Morris J. Jackson, Caplti'm SPARTANS LOSE TO MILLIGAN COLLEGE Johnson City, Tcnn., September 25, 1948 Milligan College Buffaloes rode hard and heavy to outfight and outscorc a rugged University of Tampa Spartan eleven in a game marked by close contact and numerous penalties. Milligan moved in fast in the second period, with Puckett and Hartselle, Milligan backs, carrying the mail around right end for the first pay dirt. Tampa closed the gap in the third period with a drive that began on its own 45. Ryan pulled in a pass from Joe Morris to the Milligan 25. Two plays later Morris pitched a TD pass to Holland Aplin for the score that made it 7-6 in Milligan’s favor. White’s attempted placement was wide. In the fourth period Milligan scored twice more on runs by Carr and Holsclaw. Tampa came back to score again with Miranda plunging over from the four-yard line, making the final score, Milligan, 20; Tampa, 13. P. Ryan F. Lewis J. SCHAMBERG MEMPHIS STATE OVERPOWERS SPARTANS Memphis, Tenn., October 9, 1948 Memphis Stare Tigers buried the University of Tampa Spartans under a 43-to-16 football avalanche. The Spartans were scoreless until the final quarter. The Tigers overpowered the Spartans until the final period, when Little Joe” Morris unleashed a desperate passing attack. The passing attack set up the most R. Cundiff spectacular play of the game. Haynes of the Tigers intercepted a Morris pass within inches of the Tiger goal line and romped the full length of the field for a touchdown just as the final whistle was blown. Julian Schambcrg bore the brunt of the Spartan ground attack, but the State line was too much for the fighting Spartans. The final score, Memphis, 43; Tampa, 16. T. Urso H. Hobbs J. Layfield, Co-Captain R. Mincey E. Rubio SPARTANS SCORE THRILLING VICTORY OVER STETSON A 72-yard scoring drive early in the first period put the Spartans ahead to start, with Jerry Jackson going the final seven after Quarterback Joe Morris had tossed a couple of long passes to Aplin. Another Morris-to-Aplin pass put the Spartans on the 20-yard line as the first period ended, and Aplin scooted to the one-yard stripe on the first play of the second quarter to give Julian Schambcrg a scoring opportunity, which he took advantage of from the one-yard line. Jackson’s brilliant 76-yard run in the second quar- ter, placing the ball on the four- yard line, set up another Spartan score, and P. B. White lunged across this time after Schambcrg had driv- en to the one-yard line. Stetson counted in the third and fourth quarters, the first time on a pass from Jim Olson to Tom Decn, and the second also on a pass, this time from Tom Ewing to Nick Triantafcllu. R. Escobar A well-pleased gathering of approximately 6500 fans watched the Spartans outscorc an old-time rival, and at the same time register their first win under Coach Mike Gaddis, and their first in the Dixie Con- ference. Operating with power and precision on the ground, and with exceptional finesse and deception in the air, the Spartans ground out an 18-to-0 lead at halftime, then scored again in the final period on a brilliantly executed pass from Holland Aplin, an end, to Jim Hill, his mate on the other side of the line. rr-.v■ y ,h f MiX D. Blount T. Powell The outstanding performer of the day was Jim Hill, University of Tampa left end. He covered two fum- bles in the second quarter and caught one pass for a touchdown to play a leading part in all three Spartan touchdowns in the second period. Holland Aplin took a pass in the final period for Tampa and played an equally important role in defense in the closing minutes. Julian Schambcrg made several spectacular drives up the middle. J. McCluney Action against Pensacola Navy K. Royal D. Fucarino ROLLINS TRAMPLES Tampa, November 19, 1948 Led by a hard-charging line and a fleet of hard-co- stop backs, the Rollins Tars swept to a 35-to-6 foot- ball victory over the Tampa Spartans on rain-soaked Phillips Field. A crowd of approximately 7500 fans were in the stands for the first few minutes of the game but hurried for shelter as the skies broke loose with a torrential downpour. At the end of the contest barely 200 fans were in the park, with the rain still falling. Cal Peacock, Rollins star, took advantage of Spartan miscucs to score three touchdowns in the opening half and added two more tallies in the final half on two long runs. Jerry Stopped Him TAMPA SPARTANS With the score 3 5 to 0 against them, the Spartan offense clicked for one touchdown drive of 53 yards with P. B. White going over for the marker from the three. All three Rollins scores in the first half came after recovery of Tampa fumbles deep in their own terri- tory. Francis Natolis set up the fourth score with a 57-yard punt return with Ken Horton scoring from the two. The final marker was registered by Natolis on a fake double reverse that was good for 3 3 yards. Harry Hobbs played one of his best games in a Tampa uniform, while John Malczewski and Jack Layficld also stood out in the line. - — Anderson, S. C., November 25, 1948 Thanksgiving Day saw the Erskinc College Flying Fleet close its football season with a 34-to-O victory over the University of Tampa. Tampa never seriously threatened, although full- back Julian Schamberg plowed for good yardage throughout the game. Erskinc received the opening kickoff and had a touchdown five plays later when Clarence Lowery slashed off left tackle and cut down the sidelines after taking a handoff from Joe Blackston. The Fleet had another six points about four minutes later when Allen Shelton intercepted Joe Morris’ pass on Erskinc’s 27 and returned to the 36. Lowery made a 14-yard advance before Shelton whipped to Joe Franza in the end zone for the last 18 yards. Blackston went over for the next TD, and Lowery and Franza each accounted for another before the afternoon was over. Tampa made a great defensive stand as the third period ran out, when the Fleet could not push the ball over from the one-yard line and Tampa took over on downs. An estimated 3000 persons attended the game. t Schamberg Scores Again H. Apun W. Wright L. Maness SPARTANS MAUL MEXICO On Sunday, November 7, 194S, the University of Tampa Spartans forgot their good neighbor policy as they ran wild over the Colegio Militar football team from Mexico, 77 to 0, in an international contest before approximately 6000 fans. The score was one of the largest ever made at Phillips Field and was the climax feature of the Spartans’ Homecoming.. Everything the Spartans tried against the Mexicans worked successfully. Tampa scored at least two touchdowns in each period with five markers being racked up in the big third period when the Spartans scored 37 points. Dub Worthington, extra-point kicker, booted nine out of eleven points after touchdowns. This is believed to be a modern record for drop-kickers. The Spartans took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards for the opening touchdown with Jerry Jack- son picking up the last three yards on an offtacklc smash. The second score came after a 3 5-yard pass from Joe Morris to Jim Hill. Other TD’s were scored by Miranda, Ryan, Hobbs, Pattcy, Aplin and Blount, with Miranda, Hill and Ryan accounting for two each. Every player on the Spartan roster saw action in the contest. SEMI NOLES SCALP SPARTANS i I 1 Managers Manny Suarez Bii.i. Antonini Tony Gonzalez Tallahassee, Fla., December 4, 1948 The Florida State Scminoles won their first Dixie Conference football crown when they overwhelmed the Tampa Spartans, 33-12, before a crowd of ap- proximately 6500 HSU homecoming fans. Jerry Jackson, Tampa captain and left half, re- ceived high praise for his fine showing in the game. He was the sparkplug of the Spartan offense and was in on nearly every offensive play. Glen Cary, Harry Hobbs and Ray Escobar were tops in the Tampa forward wall. The first touchdown of the game came in the second quarter when Kenneth MacLcan, Seminole halfback, went to the three and on the next play hit right tackle for the touchdown. John Filchok’s at- tempted kick was low. Urquhart’s pass to Norman Eubanks on the 20 gave Florida State their second touchdown. The Scminoles opened up with a power attack in the third quarter and moved 74 yards for a touch- down in the opening minutes, with Manuel going over the last three yards for the score. Filchock’s kick was good to make the score 19 to 0. Chaudron scored the next Seminole score after Eubank’s interception of Schamberg’s pass on his own 42. Filchock kicked the point. The Spartans scored after taking the next kickoff and moving 58 yards on both ground and aerial plays. Jackson led the attack with runs of 14, 14 and 10 yards. Morris went across on a quarterback sneak for the score. The kick was wide and the score became FSU, 26; Tampa, 6. Jackson scored the second Tampa touchdown, and the last FSU score was made by Reddick with the extra point good. Final score—FSU, 33; Tampa, 12. The unheralded Tampa Spartans, unsccdcd and just another ball club in the newly organized Dixie Loop, knocked over two seeded teams and their friendly rivals from Tallahassee, the Florida State Seminoles, to win the first conference basketball tournament. The Spartans, under the able guidance of Coach Mike Gaddis, established a name for them- selves in their first year of competition in the small college loop. P. Danahy H. Bryan J. Gallacher F. Baity In 13 games against both conference and non- conference teams, the Spartans ended the season with a record of six wins against seven losses. Three wins in tourney play brought the season’s record to nine wins against seven losses. They played Tennessee, one of the powers of the Southeastern Conference, and gave them a good game. They went to Boston and played in the Boston Gardens against Boston College. This was indeed an honor for the Tampa school. Several big-time Southern schools would have liked to receive an invitation. r i G. Harris W. Thrift C. Fogle The Spartans reached their goal when they stopped the Lawrence Tech team from Detroit, Mich., in an intersectional game at Fort Hcstcrly, 66 to 61. In play with state opponents, the Florida Gators were the only team to best the Spartans, winning both contests. Tampa broke even with Florida State, Miami and Southern. They down- ed Stetson in both meetings. J. Booros A. Bryan H. Aplin SPARTANS SWEEP DIXIE CONFERENCE Millsaps - Florida State Howard College Tampa Tampa Tampa Bernard Cohen Manager V. Montz A courageous University of Tampa crew team with only seven men manning the sweeps, came within a boat’s length of capturing the first annual Gasparilla Intercollegiate Rowing Regatta held in Tampa in February on the choppy Hillsborough River. Rollins College of Winter Park, Fla., won the race, with Florida Southern of Lakeland in second place. Tampa was third, less than a boat’s length behind the winner. Coach Art Trubiano’s inexperienced crew jumped into the lead at the start of the race. They had a slight lead when the breaks went against them as the No. 3 oarsman’s sweep broke. They continued to hold on and all three crews were about even until the halfway mark, when the Rollins crew took over the lead. With the help of the No. 3 man, the Tampa team could have taken the race without any trouble. CREW M. Brennan, B. Stainakcr, M. Gay, R. Cundiff, W. White, T. Conover, B. Brorcin, C. Geohagen.
