We have reached the end of a full college year—not just any year, but the year 1941. We leave its memories bound be- tween the covers of this Moroccan. If sometimes in the years to come upon reopening this book, you can recapture for a little while the feel of the life here at Tampa U., the 1941 Moroccan will have achieved its purpose. Not Pictured: Reed. 1940 Sept. 14—Appalachian: Fresh from their training camp high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina the Spartans journeyed to Boone to take on a highly rated Mountaineer eleven. However, the Teachers were able to score only twice, the first coming as a result of a lucky long pass. Beynon plunged over for the Spartan tally. Final—Apalachian 13, Tampa 6. Sept. 27—Stetson: Alter battling to a scoreless tie for the first fifty-nine minutes of the game our boys finally crashed into the win column. They moved ninety-nine yards in four plays to humble the Hatters. Our Champ intercepted a Stetson pass on his own one- yard stripe. Then Levin heaved three passes to Howell, the last connecting for a touchdown. Final—Tampa 6, Stetson 0. Oct. 5—Florida: The Spartans fought the heavily favored Gators to a standstill in the first half. How- ever, superior reserve strength soon began to tell and the weary Spartan line began to crack after a fluke safety on a kick-off cost them two points. It was a bitterly fought game as evidenced by the free-for all in the second half. Final—Florida 23, Tampa 0. Oct. 11—Miami: Once again Miami produces a power- house attack that completely bewilders the Spartans. Scoring in the first, third and fourth quarters the Hurricanes pound- ed the Spartan line relentlessly. Tragedy struck in the Orange Bowl when Paul Hance, Spartan back, was tackled by three Hurricanes while returning a punt, and suffered a cracked vertebra. Final— Miami 27, Tampa 0. After Williams took the opening kickoff for a touchdown it was Tampa all the way. Final—Tampc 64, Georgia 14. Nov. 2—Stetson: The Hatters evened things up by taking the Spartans into camp in the second game of their series. A hot day and a poor field slov ed up the Spartan attack. Highlight of the game was Champ Wil- liams' ninety-five yard runback of the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Final—Stetson 19. Tampa 13. Nov. 8—Oglethorpe: Playing like demons inspired the Spartans rolled over the Stormy Petrels like the tide. Our boys were led by Quentin, Champ Williams who turned in a sensational dis- play of broken field running to hit the touchdown trail five times. Outstanding feature of the game was the downfield blocking of the Tampans, who kept the Petrels splattered on the turf all night. Comparato and Strancr also scored on long runs. Final—Tampa 52, Oglethorpe 0. Nov. 22—Rollins: Once again the smoothest small college football team it has been our privilege to see, humbled our Spartans. Combining deception and power with a bewildering aerial attack the Tars scored four times. Champ accounted for the lone Spartan tal- ly. Straner brought the crowd to its feet repeatedly by racing for gains around Lit- tle All-American Lingerlelt's end. Final— Rollins 20, Tampa 5. . BABY SPARTANS 1941 Hardin. Myers. Cooksey Here are the fellows who act as chopping blocks for the Varsity all season. The squad has some excellent material in it and promises to send some first rate players to the Varsity. The boys didn't win any of their games, but what the heck—we all had a good time. For four years you have labored to have your pictures on this page, and here it is—a signpost designating the parting of the ways. But before you leave us we want you to know that though memories may grow dim you will never be forgotten. We, the student body, appreciate all that you have done for our University. Your labor, sweat and blood have done much to push Tampa into the respected position which it now occupies. This was accomplished only by hour on hour of practice under a broiling sun or on a muddy field. So don't think we have the idea that football is played just one night a week. We know that it's not the gay party some think it is, so we once again say thanks for your endeavors, and remember that you'll alv ays be Fighting Spartans. Champ’ John Brandenberger — 5' 11 — 180 lbs. This guy is the clown prince of football. We may not come out on top always, but if Brandy is there we'll be happy. Underneath his clowning is a smooth loose-hipped runner and a vicious blocker—he likes to throw a football but would rather throw the bull. He's a product of Meridan, Conn., and is a good man to have on your side. Brandy hopes to be a salesman of anything after graduation. Paul Hance — 5'10 —180 Ik One of the hardest driving ai most elusive backs we ha1 ever seen run. Paul met v i a serious mishap in Miami lc season. Driving into three hi: ky Hurricanes, he fractured vertebra. 3ut he's up and d ing O.K. now. Biggest footfcx thrill was playing Florida f the first time. He got off sever beautiful runs in this game. A other Tampa lad, Paul is loo ing forward to a nice, long re We'll miss ya, Chop-Chop. Brandy' SENIORS 1941 Quentin Williams — 5' 10” —■ 165 lbs. Champ has been one of the big guns in the Spar- tan attack for the last three years—one of the best brok- en-field runners ever devel- oped in this state—also an | excellent defensive back— thrilled by scoring five touch- downs against Oglethorpe. Replacing the Champ is one of Coach Stewart's biggest problems. Received honor- able mention on Little All- American squad. A Tampa boy, the Champ plans to coach. i t Slick Richard Sleichter—6'T—190 lbs. A very dependable man to have on the flank. Dick's playing made opposing sig- nal callers think twice before calling a play around his end. You could see his grin from one end of the field to the other. Got a great kick out of going high in the air to snatch passes. Hailing j from Scotland, Pa., Slick is another one who is hoping for a nice long rest. Paul Myers—6'—180 lbs. An- other good boy to have on the end of your line. Also played in the center position, and efficiently too. Biggest football thrill came as a Freshman, when the under rated Spartan Frosh knocked over a greatly publicized Miami Freshman team in the newly built Orange Bowl. A native of Bexley, Ohio, Paul has his eyes set on a coach- ing job when he graduates. “Chop-Chop' Paul 1941 SENIORS Sally Clair Pittman—6'1 —185 lbs. Another utility man who played tackle, guard, or cen- ter—one of those fellows who take a delight in making op- posing linemen look and feel foolish. Get most fun out of a game with Havana in 1938. Pitt is another product of Tampa and will be hard to replace in the line. ;Plans to enter the business world. Paul McCloskey—5'11 —180 lbs. A smooth running back who helped prove that beef isn’t all that counts. A block- ing boy who enjoyed taking care of would-be tacklers when one of his buddies was lugging that rock. Coming from Eoston, Mac intends to study medicine when he graduates. Dri Willard Driskell — 6'2 — 198 lbs. A man who served equally well in the tackle or guard slot. A player who wasn't as aggressive as he was large. Enjoyed break- ing up opponent's plays be- fore they developed. A tough down-field blocker on offensive. One of the Romeos of the squad. A smooth cus- tomer on or off the field. Coming from Fort Meade, Fla., Dris intends to enter the air corps. Mac Coach Nash Higgins Coach Higgins, who has been Director o{ Athletics and Head Coach of football since its inception here in the University, resigned his position this year. He fur- nished a splendid example for his boys and we'll miss him lots. Goorgo Straus Business Manager Athletic Staff 1Q40 Line Coach Pix Pierson This season was the last for Coach Pierson also. Truly one of the finest men we have ever known, he labored for years with the Spartans and will be hard to replace. Good luck, Pix. Student Athletic Managers Goodson and Ball check- ing over their equipment. Jack graduates after three years as Manager. Mark gradutes after two years as Co-Manager. Trainer Gregory Lucas, Spartan Trainer, checks over a casualty on the field. SPRING PRACTICE For eight weeks the Spartans have been laboring on Philip's Field trying to learn Coach Stewart's system and get in shape for the forthcoming season. They have played lour intra-squad games and your editor thinks that those of you who are around next fall will have a team to be proud of calling your own. Howard Beynon has been elected captain and Ed “Dixie'' Hov ell has been selected co-captain for next season. Good luck to you fellas. The Reds kick to «he Whites so tho Whites kick back to tho Rods. Adams, Coach Our Spartan baseball team is something of which we can be justly proud. Only two years old, it is by far the outstanding scholastic baseball organization in the state. Miller Adams deserves much of the credit, but much is also due to the efforts of the boys themselves. Organized originally by Miller as an independent team, they were unrecognized by the University. However, their trail of spectacular wins soon won for them the attention of the school and of Tampa as a whole. They justified their early publicity by going on and winning the state cham- pionship. This year's squad seems no less capable than last year's and has an excellent chance of repeating as champs. They have played no regular games as yet, but have won their warm-up games. Our hats are off to you. Miller, and your champions. ”Eagle-Ey© Jiminet waits lor the pitch. A1 plays shortstop on the Spartan ball club and is one oi Coach Adams' most consistent hitters. Good for two at least—this is the way Arnie Holmes looks alter he unwinds at an invit- ing pitch. Arnie covers the hotspot at third base. State Champs in Action Left: The Champ gets one for a p.o. Champ Williams is one of the capable first basemen of the squad and is one of the big guns in the Spartan's batting attack Right: A ball team can only be as strong as its pitcher. Looking down the alley we see Johnny Clements, who helps make the Spartans a plenty strong club.
