PRESIDENTS MESSAGE The percentage of its alumni Who go in for graduate degrees and certificates of various kinds is usually regarded as a fair index of the success of a college. It is the duty of a liberal arts institution to convince its students that the countries of the mind are menis proper habitations. The typical university product should enjoy and naturally exercise all his powers of thought. He is thus more fully human. But even college graduates have been known to relapse; have been known, in practice, to deny their rational heritage; have been known to adopt the lethargic mooning method of existence as preferable to the strenuous and exacting mode demanded of them by their experience. Most, indeed, Who do not continue formal study do not fall into this class; but those who do continue, make public proclama- tion, as it were, that they intend to enter upon a way of life Which scorns to avoid the difficulties and fatigues involved in keeping their intellectual faculties at stretch. They have learned how to enjoy using their minds and are not about to be Cheated out of that pleasure.
