You can now move through the deca- des-the World War ll era, the baby- boom, the Korean War, the days of Kenne- dy, Vietnam, and the Nuclear age. USM has grown to be over 640 acres, 120 build- ings, three branch centers, and over 12,000 students and faculty. Expansion, tradition, vision make USM a place to come of age! A Coming of Age realizes that we are seventh-live years old. USM has come from the Normal CoIlege to State Teachers College, to Mississippi Southern, to the pre- sent. We have come so far, but as the old Cliche goes, have so far to go. We have not reached our full potential-no institution ever does. There will always be changes for the better and for the worse. These changes, however can only strengthen the bond of service and commitment that The Universi- ty of Southern Mississippi holds so true. A Coming of Age knows the problems and fears of yesterday-the threats of war, eco- nomic fluctuations, and passing a final ex- amination. The flowers still bloom, parking tickets are still given out, teachers still chal- lenge their students to think, and the crowd still yells for the Black and Gold. 1 5 i a 9 i 1 .Km 'LA Coming of Age is a tribute to the University of Southern Mississippi and the people and region it serves. Reaching out to the students is only one aspect of the Uni- versity's life. Students and faculty are in- volved in aspects of political, religious, and social life of the region. The University not only educates, but en- 'f 1',, tertains as the Big Gold fly into M. M. Roberts Stadium and as Southern Expo- sure sings the blues. Fans at the ball games support the Eagles twin or losej and new professionals are given to the region with every graduating class. A Coming of Age emphasizes the advances that The Univer- sity of SouthernMississippi has made over 0 4 the years. Imagine yourself transformed back intime to 1912. You have probably just come from your hometown, and you are around 16 years old. There is no electricity no comforts of home. Your new home has become Mississippi Normal College. V I .
