Sorority u h ot what ou would expect Rush was not anything like anyone expected. lt 25 was far more than just a bunch of sorority women ,fe meeting a bunch of rushees. It was a week of hard L, - ' work, trials. and tribulations. lg ,V 1 Rush for the sororities began in the Spring gf: ' ' semester. There were workshops held in which a number of girls spent countless hours perfecting f skits and songs. Lots of time was also spent work- l ing on props and costumes. The skits and songs E performed each day of rush helped explain to the : rushees a little of what Greek life is like at USM. During the week of rush, about three hundred girls went to parties, watched skits, and talked to lF fi sorority members. After all of these activities 1, ff F- , -TJ took place, the final decision rested in both the 5 J ' ' i' hands of the rushees and the sororities. . I Bid Day was exciting for both groups. Once Qi bids were handed out, the rushees ran from Scott Hall to Panhellinic to find their new sisters. Left: On Bid Day,the floors of Panhellinic were as excited as the rushees. Each soror- ity decorated their balcony to welcome their new sisters. E liu , hm I x 1 I-Q '95 F s , --fi. u C Bid Day was exciting for both the sororities and the rushees. Left: With the renovation of Mississippi Hall. it reopened its doors to many new comers. Lit' tle did this empty room know what awaited it when its boarders arrived. Below: Many stu- dents chose to move into the dorms the first day they opened. Teri Sue Bankston checked into her room after a long drive from home. tk 'I I ' Y lt Brings horrors, hassles That long awaited day has finally arrived. You are a college student! As you take the first load of pieces from home to that room which you have convinced yourself is a small plush apartment. you insert the key into the lock that will protect your life's trea- sures for the next nine months. The door swings open and you fall to the ground from overwhelming goulash green walls and the locker room smell. When you come back to life you find someone who looks as though he stepped off the set of the Revenge of The Nerds movie hov- ering over you. You let out a scream of terror and when you both recover from the shock. he introduces himself as your roommate. No, no, this just can't be! lt's just a dream. The problem is, the worst is yet to come. Your suitemates enter. obviously dressed for a con- l2 Campus Life Settling , and headaches sume party as Hell's Angels. Late that afternoon, you carry up your last load of towels and they feel as though they are a box of bricks. After collapsing on the bed, you real- ize there is something moving under you!! The dreaded vinyl covered mat- tress. What could happen next? You have to rent your books You decided you will be smart for a change and get to the bookstore early. After you go through security clear- ance, you find out that everyone else decided tojoin you in the book renting process. You collect approximately three hundred pounds of text and then be- gin the time of your life. You never realized that standing in line could be so much fun. Three hours later you place the books on the counter and attempt to get your check book out of your back pocket with your arms and hands that are permanently bent into a cradle position. With shaking hand you write out a check and hand it to the checker along with your brand new ID. The woman at the counter goes into hys- terics claiming it was the funniest thing ever and holding it up so that the 600 students behind you can enjoy it too. Three weeks later, after suffering from total humiliation, nerve dam- age, and physical exhaustion, you re- alize that college life might not kill you after all. You are so glad that you found out your suitemates were really going to a costume ball. And as for your roomie, well, you think you might be able to hold out until the next semester. It will just take some getting used IO.
