From Coloring Books . . . The children of the 70's have been educated in school systems which have been under attack on several grounds. The educational system of the 70's has been innovative. New programs have been put underway in many school systems-the open classroom, for example. The in- tegration of schools which started in 1968 has continued into the 70's and has met with continuing controversy. Mainstreaming has been ini- tiated to give retarded children the optimum education possible for them. Test scores have dropped and cases have been brought against school systems by high school graduates who claimed they couldn't even read.
