The 1973 Golden Eagles football team proudly boasted a 6-4-1 record after last season's disappointments. Scoring 227 total points against the opponents 156 in eleven games, the offensive line began to show its improvements as the defensive line against the rush ranked eleventh in the nation statistically. In fact, USM's defense finished as the nation's Number One team against the rush for one game QUSM vs. Chattanoogal. With three disheartening losses behind them, the Eagles began to bounce back. After their last loss of the season to Richmond, they went on to play Mississippi State, nationally ranked at that time. A caravan of fans and supporters journeyed to the Cow Country to see USM hold the Bulldogs to a 10-10 tie. What a moral victory for Southern that was! The Eagles, now going strong, went on to finish the season posting four consecutive victories. The progress of the team encouraged coaches, administrators, and legislators as USM prepared to build the new stadium in hopes that one day highly ranked teams would soon play in Hattiesburg, While opponents completed 118 out of 232 passes 151921, USM completed 140 out of 251 667212. With 62 penalties for 559 yards and 20 lost fumbles, it's not hard to see why the Eagles lost a few games which could have been won. But within the team there were individuals who stood out. There was Rick Palmer, who averaged 38.5 yards in his punting. There was Doyle Orange who scored five TD's-not as many as last year but more than any other player on the team. There was Jeff Bower who proved that being only a sophomore was no hindrance to be- coming a top-notched quarterback. There were also Eugene Bird, tackling and knock- ing down those big bruisers, and Harvey McGee who played in the post-season Blue- Gray game in Mobile. And last, there was Fred-Bubba Cook, as known to his teammates. Big Fred again intimidated coaches and opposing blockers as well as destroying quarterbacks game after game. Fred finished the season with four All-Star classics and was named to the AP's Third Team All-American squad at the defensive end post. Despite a slow start and early injuries, the first full season for the Colden Eagles football team showed that football at USM is on the move. The 1974-75 season will be played away from home, but thafs no reason for a bad season. With the building of a new stadium and a very promising team, this could lead to another Year of the Golden Eaglef, 1 l Eootball W
