.i . Wit 'Q fs, Ai ,jfgL,. Q The University We came to this city because the school is located here. The University seemingly co-exists with its surroundings and vice- versa. At first glance, the USM campus either looks pocket-handerchief size or you feel you're lost. After you've been here for a while, it either shrinks more, gets larger or you get used to it. Brick and mortar, copper dome, and white columns of the early era of building are interspersed with the large and long and square and rambling buildings of a new era. Evergrowing, the campus has been kept muddy with construction whether it be new classrooms or new sidewalks. lviultia-purposed and utilitarian, these physical structures each have at least one specific purpose, iii not more. Room or board, instruction oi recreation, academic or social. lt is the structure of these buildings that designate the purpose. lt is the people of USM who fulfill these purposes, 50 1951 wwhuq- lun--. inseam. its - ai , l E' Ei . -. The City Situated in the middle of the southern part of Mississip- pi we find Hattiesburg-the only one in the world. Though covered by the effects of 1972 and twentieth century Americana, underneath this facade, you will find a foun- dation of yellow pine lumber and railroad tracks, two things that built the town tintermingled throughout with the legends of Captain Hardy and his wife Hattie, the founders of the 'burg.i Today, home of Hercules, the Magnolia Classic Golf Tournament, Kamper Park, Camp Shelby, and in the 2600 block of Hardy Street we find one of the State's Institutions of Higher Learning. lnhabited andlor attended by roughly 9000 individuals, some who know about the early history of the locale and others who could care less.
