Foreword The Sixties have ended and the University of Southern Mississippi weathered them well. The best years, hopefully, are yet to come. The new attitude at Southern, like that of the rest of the nation's colleges and universities, is no sudden development. It is the culmination of a series of events-intellectual, political, and social. In Southernis case, the Sixties were simply the period of gestation for these new ideas. Since the 1970 SOUTHERNER covers the 1969-70 term, it marks both the end and beginning of important decades. Through the following pages the rising status of the University is shown, but as the Seventies begin we must learn how we can best employ our advances for our benefit and for the benefit of those we precede. 2
