The departments of Biology, Chemistry, English and Literature, Foreign Languages, Geography, History and Government, Journal- ism, Mathematics, Military Sciences, Physics, Religion, Philoso- phy, Sociology, and Speech Arts compose the School of Arts and Sciences. Providing a broad cultural and educational experience for all University of Southern Mississippi students and making available to them specialized disciplines for major and minor fields is the purpose of the School of Arts and Sciences. To meet the general education or core requirements necessary for graduation, freshmen and sophomores, regardless of their expected majors, are enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences. This school also offers pre- medical technology, and nursing. In addition, pre-professional pro- grams may be planned for students in architecture, forestry, social work, veterinary medicine, the ministry, and other fields.
